Should've had him go around the country speaking to teenagers about the dangers of drunk driving or some shit. If he's not going to jail for his crime then he should be put to good use. Church sentences shouldn't be allowed, for obvious reasons.

From his perspective though, I'd definitely much rather have to be bored a few hours a week at church than be in prison.

Unconstitutional as fuck but if I were dude, I wouldn't try to fight this one.

It's once a week for 10 years = 520 visits for an hour = 520 hours in a non-violent albeit potentially annoying or boring environment, although if it's one of those baptists' churches it could be a laugh riot of fun!

Or the alternative, 10 years x 365 days = 3,650 days x 24 hours = 87,600 hours of inevitable violence, immense boredom, and weirdos who are never getting out that think you're just the cutest thing to walk into their world. Eh.

I overall consider this a good idea. A creative way to change a young mans life is better than putting him behind bars. Religion is a "shot in the dark" and is usually morally insufficient. But then again, the legal system is, too. One must also respect the victims family for choosing forgiveness above vengeance.

However, a state should not resort to a particular religion in legal issues. It should make a clear separation between state legal system and what people privately agree on doing during their private settlement.

If he doesn't fight the charge I don't think it matters if it's Constitutional since it would be his rights that were being violated.

I have no problem with this sentence. The family of the victim was OK with and if they're fine with the lack of punishment then I'm fine with it too. Also looking at the article is sounds like there were 2 kids that were drinking and doing dumb shit. One ending up dying in the crash and the other ended up in trouble because he was driving. Yeah it was dumb but the kid that died made the same dumb decision as the kid that drove did. I don't mind that we aren't spending $300,000 (about) to house this kid in prison for 10 years.

Meh, he's lucky to be given the opportunity to bypass a prison sentence.

It was an accident and the other person agreed to getting into the vehicle. There should be no punishment at all. Making him go to church is disgusting. There should be out rage what a shitty state.

This is all over the place in so many ways. It's unconstitutional for starters so the sentence should be superseded for that reason. I feel bad for the guy, he killed his friend because of a drunken mistake and to be fair his friend voluntarily got in the car but you have to pay for that and getting out of jail to go to church for 10 years isn't right, although there probably isn't much difference
