My mother and my sister's mother-in-law talk in backhanded compliments about each other's cooking, child-rearing, and church attendance. And I sit in an uncomfortable antique chair with a book, or wrangle my nieces.

We are not doing this in 2012, because my sister and her husband are getting divorced - making the current arrangement even more awkward than usual. So, I asked my mother what we were doing. She has never met a boxed dinner she could not ruin, my father (who does all the cooking) said he was too tired to do a big dinner, and my sister said that she was too stressed from getting divorced.

Thus. It falls to me. However, there is a problem. I, as a single, self-employed person with no roommates or children, am not at all qualified for cooking for more than one.

I may just tell them that I am protesting the oppression of indigenous people and we can order pizza. But probably not.

Do any of you have advice for cooking large meals for about 8 people?
My advice? Don't do it. Order out and pretend you cooked it. Are they meat eaters? If so, and if you're determined to do it yourself, cook a roast, loads of vegetables (buy pre-cut – I prefer fresh, but you can go with frozen too - if you need to save time) and have side dishes like olives, pickles, coleslaw, oven-baked dressing. Whatever you choose, it's better to make too much than not enough. Oh, and you`ve never done so before, do not try to tackle a turkey,

True story, I tried to make Thanksgiving dinner myself once. I bought a turkey, invited friends and family over...what could go wrong? My turkey was white – pale as raw – and fell apart when I tried to lift it out of the cooking pan. No one trusts me to cook anything anymore, they just skip over me when assigning what to prepare and bring to group meals. Actually, that`s not a such a bad thing. Maybe attempting a turkey worked out rather well in the end.

Re: Oh, God. I might have to cook Thanksgiving.

Invite them to come around early on the bullshit premise of a shared communal cooking experience for family bonding, if your Dad usually does all the cooking and the rest of ye are as bad as you say then chances are he'll end up taking over and doing it anyway. If youre feeling especially lazy make sure to show him what an absolute mess you're making of your dish so he cracks and insists on doing it himself.
Even if he doesnt and it turns out bad you can blame them and if it turns out good you can steal all the kudos.

Just order the entire meal from a catering service. That's what I did 2 years ago when my family insisted on having Thanksgiving at my place. It didn't have the great taste you get from a home cooked dinner, but any complaints just got a "Hey you asked for this!" reply from me.

Re: Oh, God. I might have to cook Thanksgiving.

Find a black woman that's use to cooking sunday dinners to either cook the food for you, or guide you through the way.

(In all seriousness, it's not hard at all. Get some big pots/pans, and just cook a shitload of food)

Re: Oh, God. I might have to cook Thanksgiving.

It's really not that hard(maybe it's because I'm black). Just start early and get a bunch of pots and pans and cook a lot of food. The hardest part is making sure that the turkey is correctly cooked. You don't wanna have it too dry. Or you could just do a roast. I feel that they taste better than turkey anyways and are much easier to cook. Or you could always say fuck it and just order some food or have someone else do it for you. Good luck.

Re: Oh, God. I might have to cook Thanksgiving.

This is why I fear dating western women,They're not all taught to cook at a young age like eastern women and I do like it when a woman herself loves cooking and sharing her food with whoever she cares for.

Re: Oh, God. I might have to cook Thanksgiving.

If you're so all-fired insistent on homemade food, learn to cook yourdamnself. It's worked for my dad for 42 years.

For the people with useful input, thanks. Talked to my Dad, he said that there's no room to store food at their house, but if I could find a pre-cooked turkey, the two of us could knock out some sides. He's picky about dressing.
