Agreed, but I don't have the necessary 50 posts to make a thread there yet.

No, alcohol isn't helping me at all. I just enoy sitting together with my social circle and drink like there is no tomorrow.

Could you not have an enjoyable time without it, though?

True but you have to take into considertation that a lot of people grew up in enviromments that were rather destructive to their self esteem and they don't have those skills to be as social as others. The alcohol is to them a crutch; if they do something stupid they can go back and blame the alcohol.

I dont like drinking myself; I like the occasional drink with a meal because I like a cold beer but to me the best social situation is a pub having a conversation with one or two beers. I'm not a club person; and at clubs I myself tend to drink too much just so that I can put up with all the drunk people there.

Granted I come from a country of alcoholics (Scotland) so this may be different for me.

I can have an enjoyable time without alcohol, but I have an even better time when I've got that buzz going. I usually stick to Newcastle or Guinness when I buy beer, or Rum/Jack if I am buying liquor. I also like to read on my patio with a glass of Grey Goose and Sprite/Tonic.

I have never drank enough alcohol to get properly drunk. People do stupid shit when they are drunk. My father got almost killed at least twice. Once I watched a guy chase him with a knife. Some drunken argument had escalated. Thank god he was a fast runner or he might be dead. I wonder if the knife guy would have come for my mom and myself next if he had caught him. I don't understand why anyone would voluntarily drink so much that they lose control. What if you get in a fight? What if you kill someone? What if you rape someone? What if you drive over someone on your way home? Have fun spending half your life in jail because you drank that poison and did something that you would have never done otherwise.

I like to drink when I'm out with friends, and I've had a few really messy nights where I've blacked out and been violently sick due to drinking, but for the most part I can control myself and rarely get into that kind of state. I don't drink every weekend, and I probably only get actually drunk maybe once a month if that. I get the appeal, for a lot of people it's the only release they have after a long week at work, for others it's just because their friends do it and they don't want to feel left out.

I can take it or leave it, I'm okay with drinking soft drinks when others are getting wasted, if I don't feel like drinking then I won't. I don't really understand why people feel they "need" to get drunk. I've got a couple of friends who drink purely for the sake of it, I don't think I could ever do that. It's expensive as well, especially in London where I live, and the money could be better spent on more rewarding things. It's all a matter of preference, I don't have a problem with anyone who likes to binge on alcohol, but it's never been my thing.

If you cannot physically have a good time without getting drunk, I think that probably says something about you, or the company you keep to be honest.

Well said by the OP. Something that I definitely agree with.

I'm only 20 years old just now and I'm in my final year at University. I've never really been a big drinker but I would drink when going on nights out. I have always tried to avoid drinking at other times though (in between lectures, after uni/work, in the house). Alcohol is definitely a bad thing overall, I only ever drank it to improve my confidence in clubs so I could get girls.

But people drink it for different reasons, some because they enjoy it (a few drinks relaxes them), some drink for confidence and many drink so that they can "fit in" with the group.

But now moving forward I have decided to cut my alcohol use from occasional to never. I have always wanted to be straight edge (I've never taken any other drugs including cigarettes) and it was only the occasional alcohol use that was standing in my way. I'm not concerned about perceiving myself as fitting in, I don't like the taste of it, I don't like how much it costs and it's very unhealthy. On the issue of confidence it has no longitudal benefits (quite the opposite I believe) and girls in clubs aren't worth it. That's a brief summary of my personal reasons why I'm not interested in it and I could go on all day about why other people should avoid it but I won't bother.
