My great uncle was a PoW in WW2. My dad told me years ago that one night a fight broke out in my great uncle's block and the Germans (Nazi's) sent in two of their canines to sort the quarrel/brawl out. By the time the guards came back the prisoners had killed and eaten the dogs. As far as I know my great uncle was not involved in the brawl or the dogs, but he was there when it occurred and testified to my dad that (obviously) many of the prisoners were beyond starving. The animal lover in me has always felt bad for the dogs though in the story (not sorry). Other than that none of my ancestors have been involved in anything too shocking - I hope.
None of it is what I would call "shocking" but perhaps noteworthy:
On my father's side, my Great-Great-Great-Great-Great grandfather was a personal bodyguard to General George Washington for a lengthy period of time during the Revolutionary War as well as a member of the "Commander-in-Chiefs Guard." He had been selected among four men from each regiment of the Continental Army for the latter position.
His son was a personal friend to Daniel Boone for at least a couple of years and played a modest part in the legal settling of Kentucky.
My grandfather left the Missouri farm on which he had worked his whole life penniless and with only the clothes on his back jumped on to a train from St. Louis, after reaching the city, to California. (Attempting to have a novel I recently finished writing that is partially about this published through one means or another soon.)
On my mother's side, my Great grandfather was a prominent Indianapolis lawyer and later judge for the state of Indiana.
All I know is that originally our family is from Persia (an area called sabzwar) and moved to India about 500 years ago. There's some shocking revelations that are too personal to share, but they're not entirely that good. My aunt used to lie about us being directly related to Mohammad :lol Which is obviously a lie.
My mother's side of the family was fully integrated into the British Raj. My maternal grandfather worked for the British government (and that translated into a good position in the Pakistani government after partition). The most interesting thing there is that he was granted an enormous amount of wealth after partition which he gave away. Post partition, he continued the tradition of westernization in my family.
My father is a self-made man who's a true rags to riches story. In 1979 all he had was an Engineering Degree in Project Management and a few dollars to his name, which he has converted into a million dollar fortune over the years. He's also considered one of the top engineers in the country with over 200 completed projects to his name.
The most shocking thing I learned was that I wasn't related to half of the people I thought were ancestors. My mom was adopted and she never told me until I turned 18 that I wasn't biologically related to anyone but her on her side of the family.
I'm distantly related to some Irish royalty. Not sure who or when, but it's definitely there in my family tree.
My grandmother (who's still alive today, she's 95) flew warplanes in WWII, which is so badass. And my grandfather was a chef and cooked for famous people when they came to NZ, he was The Beatles' personal chef when they visited.
And a random thing I found out about my Mum - she dated a wrestler before she met my Dad, he was almost 7 foot tall. No wonder she's into wrestling, and got me into it :lol
My great grandfather was in the mafia. I'm not sure if he was a mob boss but he was highly respected among those people. Nobody in my immediate family has ties to the mob and the extended family who do are all dead or really old now.
My ancestors include shaman, side show performers, psychics, circus acrobats, wrestlers, notorious drunks, insane geniuses, horse racers, a serial rapist, a bank robber and a founding member of a religious cult. Carneys, crazies and degenerates.
Oh, and one wrote a couple of classic county songs that he gave away the rights to. He was, naturally, drunk off his ass when he made that mistake. Not to say that was shocking but really more just what you'd expect from my folks.
I know nothing about my great ancestors. But my Grandma in her time had dated Redd foxx, Sidney Portier, a few wrestlers, and Fats Domino (Fats Domino ended up being my grandpa) with all the famous people she dated, she must of been a looker.
I guess those genes didn't get passed down though.
My Grandfather has said that we are somehow (I don't remember exactly how) related to the bank robber/gangster Pretty Boy Floyd. My great grandfather and my Dad indirectly were named after him as the name Charles was passed down through the generations.
