Bryce Dejean-Jones killed while breaking into Dallas apartment

New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment early Saturday, authorities said.

Dejean-Jones' agent, Scott Nichols, said his client died after a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to Dallas police, officers responded to a call about a shooting at Camden Belmont Apartments around 3:20 a.m. Saturday morning. The resident of an apartment there said an individual had kicked open his front door and entered. The resident, who had been asleep, retrieved a handgun and called out to the individual but did not receive an answer. The individual kicked the bedroom door and the resident fired his gun through the door, striking him.

Officers who responded found Dejean-Jones collapsed in an outdoor passageway, and he later died at a hospital. Police at that point identified him as Dejean-Jones. He was 23.

According to an email that the apartment complex sent to its residents Saturday morning, the individual was "believed to be breaking into the apartment of an estranged acquaintance [but] inadvertently broke into the wrong apartment."

Dejean-Jones was visiting his girlfriend in Dallas for his daughter's first birthday, which was Saturday, according to Nichols. He said the girlfriend returned to the apartment first while Dejean-Jones went for a walk after they had gone out.

"He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it's locked,'' Nichols told the Associated Press. "So one thing led to another.''

Sources told ESPN that Dejean-Jones was involved in an argument with the child's mother before the shooting.

According to a report from the NBA's senior vice president and chief security officer that was sent to teams and obtained by ESPN, no charges have been filed against the apartment resident. Under Texas law, a person is allowed to use deadly force to defend themselves in their home. It also says a person using force cannot provoke the attacker or be involved in criminal activity at the time.

The NBA report obtained by ESPN also noted that a toxicology report is "a couple weeks" away, but it is "unknown at this time if a substance played a part in the incident." An update from the Dallas PD is expected Tuesday.

Dejean-Jones signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after joining the team on consecutive 10-day contracts. He started 11 of 14 games before undergoing surgery for a broken right wrist and missing the rest of the season.

"It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones," the team said in a statement. "We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family during this difficult time."

A native of Los Angeles, Dejean-Jones averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes over the 14 games last season.

"Bryce overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career," Nichols told ESPN's Justin Verrier. "He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career."

NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed his condolences in a statement later Saturday.

"The NBA family mourns the tragic loss of New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones," he said. "Bryce inspired countless people with his hard work and perseverance on his journey to the NBA, and he had a bright future in our league. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Bryce's family and the entire Pelicans organization during this difficult time."

Dejean-Jones played college ball at USC, UNLV and Iowa State before going undrafted in 2015. He played the 2014-15 season for Iowa State after graduating from UNLV.

"We are deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Bryce," former Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "I'm grateful that our paths crossed in this life. Bryce was a passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance. It's an incredibly sad day for me and all of Iowa State University. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family."
Some dumb comments about this.

"I won't argue that this was a colossally dumb decision, but I would argue that breaking into a house doesn't warrant being shot."

"Here's how I look at it: Guns belong to the military, police and maybe licensed hunters. If that were the case, a man would not have died and another one's life would not have been permanently damaged."

"If the mistake would have been realized when he didn't see his girlfriend, this was clearly a preventable death that was promoted by gun ownership. Not a great time to hide behind stand your ground."

""intent on hurting her " How would you know? Are you a mind reader ? If this wasn't a country obsessed with guns and shooting without thinking, the residents would have turned on their lights and demanded what he was doing. No burglar kicks in a door, the noise would wake everyone up, and that is why it should have been possible to difuse the situation."

"This is why the 2nd amendment needs to be abolished and immediately pass a gun confiscation law soon after."

"It sounds like a stupid mistake that ended in an unnecessary death solely because of the existence of a gun."

fpalm

Let's say he got the right apartment, his girlfriend's, instead. You usually don't bust down a front door and then a bedroom door at 3 a.m. with good intentions in mind.

Sucks the guy is dead at such a young age with so much promise before him, but that's on him, not the shooter.

None of these morons have ever had anyone break into their home while they were there. I have. You don't know what this person is going to try to do to you and it is the most terrifying feeling you can feel. The guy was trying to rob my roommate and tried to overpower me, if I'd had a gun I would have shot him. Didn't have one so I just hit him in the balls and gouged his eyes. Then I got the fuck outta there and called the cops because he kept reaching behind his back and I didn't know what he had in his waistband back there.

tldr fuck you you naive little shits. Don't break into people's homes. Death at the hand of the person who lives there is 100% justified.

It sucks that the guy is dead after all he has done to make it in life, but what the hell are you doing kicking in somebody's door in the middle of the night? So many people never even bother to consider the possible consequences of their actions. At the very least he could have faced jail time for what he was doing. Unfortunately for him, it turned out to be the worst case scenario.

People that think like this worry me.

And it says it was meant to be where his "estranged acquaintance" lived. What the fuck. My best friends wouldn't be allowed to do that to me, much less my family, and I feel like that would be generally understood. He had to have been high.

It's quite curious that today the national publications are portraying this as "guy accidentally enters wrong apartment, gets shot and killed" while the Dallas media is sticking with what law enforcement has said in addition to their own reporting, including the fact that Bryce Dejean-Jones argued with his estranged girlfriend, stormed out and returned at 3:20AM & kicked down the front door and bedroom door of the wrong apartment thinking it was his girlfriend's apartment.

Strange...

Someone kicking your front door down at 3am and then kicking at your bedroom door at 3am is one of the exact reasons why the second amendment is in place. The guy had it coming.

People that commits acts of domestic violence bother more than anyone else. I don't know this for certain obviously but it seems like this guy was going to break into the girl's house and was going to beat her up. I'm not upset that he didn't have the chance to do that.

Eh. I don't think it should have ended in a shooting, but the fact of the matter is that more often than not people that barge into others' homes like this are armed and dangerous and there's no reason for someone to play the odds instead of protecting themselves and their home. This is America. The comparisons to countries that have fewer guns is ridiculous because at the moment and for the foreseeable future Americans are and will be heavily armed.

Sure the guy fucked up and I'm sure the person that killed the guy will probably end up suffering for the rest of his life as well. He took a life. It sucks, but I don't fault the guy for shooting in self-defense in this particular case. He did nothing wrong.

:yawn

The only reason you constantly post these things is to take shots at 'the left' isn't it. The article makes no mention of political sides, no one has mentioned politics in this thread even. You probably couldn't even explain to me what the left and right even mean.

If someone is sleeping peacefully in their home and you bust down their door, you're literally asking to be shot, it's a damn shame and a tragedy his life ended that way but the shooter had every right to do it

Dude was in a very dark place (spiritually) to busting down the door of someone's home at 3AM in the morning because you think your estranged girlfriend locked you out.

What happened to picking up the telephone and placing a phone call.

And if no one answered the telephone just wait it out in your car until the morning.

So many options, but the Devil is good at blinding people from making better choices.

Bryce Dejean-Jones was an idiot. So he kicked down the persons front down and bedroom door. He deserved to be shot in this case. If he would have just opened the bed room door maybe he wouldn't have gotten shot. But I can't imagine someone breaking down my front down then my bedroom door. The shooting is easily justifiable. Like someone else said, if Bryce Dejean-Jones was in that much of a rage who knows what would have happened to his GF if it was her room.

If the guy didnt have a gun sure he wouldn't be dead but this is why you dont get breaking peoples doors down. Even if it was his GF, she could have had a gun too.

If the guy didn't have a gun, I doubt that Bryce would've just said "oh well, my mistake, sorry bloke. See ya later".

From the sound of it, the way he was barging in and not responding, he seemed like he was either high or drunk and would most likely have assaulted the person whose house he broke into.

I watched him play at Iowa State. He had a ton of potential but had some issues. He was run out at USC, then kicked off the team at UNLV for fights with teammates. He was arrested at Iowa State when police found pot in his apartment. So, this guy had a great deal of talent but not the smarts to utilize it properly.

I'm sorry, but you can't spin "being in the wrong place at the wrong time" for someone who kicked down two doors in the hopes he was going to have a massive confrontation with his ex-girlfriend. I know if someone broke into my house they are going to get shot without the slightest hesitation. I would defend my home and family, and don't blame the guy for doing the same.

If someone is breaking into my flat at 3 in the morning damn right im gonna take em out. If it comes down to my life and some scumbag asshole trying to burgle me im picking MY life. Don't feel sorry for the guy at all he clearly wanted to break in to start trouble with his ex. He had it coming

What a colossal fuck up. For sure don't go around booting people's doors in but is his crime really punishable by death? If so then I guess everyone who's ever broken in to a house needs to go to retrial and be tried for the death penalty.

Seriously? You have the most inane response in here. Nobody is saying he deserved to die, what people are saying is they don't blame the man who shot him. He kicked down two doors at 3 am, he may have been mad and or wasted. As Reaper pointed out the guy couldn't tell it was the wrong apartment so he may have assaulted the man looking for his ex.

Nice try tho.
