Los Angeles vs. Tokyo (as a week-long vacation spot with £2000 in spending money to spare)

Los Angeles vs. Tokyo (as a vacation)?

Found myself up until like 3am a few nights ago thinking how cool it would be to get some money saved up and head away someplace metropolitan for a week. I haven't been on any trips abroad for years and now find myself in a financially viable position for that to happen.

These two were the first cities that popped into my head, and I could either which way if you's can list any pros or cons as to which is better for visiting? Preferably looking to spend something like £3500 at the most for everything.

Tokyo, LA sucks. If you want to experience an entirely different culture go to Tokyo. If you want to experience America's worst aspects but filled with superficial spots, go to LA. In my opinion, New York and Chicago >>>>>>>>> LA.

If you've never been to Los Angeles come to Los Angeles.

Amusement Parks, Hollywood, Nice Hiking trips, and beaches.

I on the other hand, have lived in Los Angeles my whole life, and am tired of it, but I'm not going to deny its a good place for a vacation.

Also since I lived in Los Angeles my whole life, I've been wanting to leave and experience something different, and the one place I would die to live in, would be Tokyo.. Taken a few Japanese language classes, and I would die to see what its like.

I haven't been to Tokyo, so I can't comment on how good it is or isn't.

On the other hand, I really liked LA. I was a bit meh on the thought of going there at first, but then I won a trip there, and I came out of it wanting to go back cos I didn't get enough time there.

If you do go to LA, don't stay in a hotel in the downtown area, it's not that close to Hollywood. But there's quite a few cool things to do.

Plus, LA is close enough to other places in the USA, like when you're there you could maybe jump over to Las Vegas or San Francisco. We took a bus tour to Vegas that included a hotel and a trip to the Grand Canyon (Y)

I've been to Tokyo, and it is certainly a cool place to visit, but it can be pretty pricey. I was there in 2005, and it seemed the food cost the same amount (I'm from NY) but the portions were tiny so I felt I needed a lot more to eat to fill up.

When I was there I got to see a Pro Wrestling NOAH show which was pretty cool, but those tickets were expensive, I had regular seats about 30 rows back and tickets costed like $200-300 when you converted it to the US.

LA would be a much more affordable trip, (depending on airfare) I've never been there, but I know there is a ton of stuff to do. If you're big into movies you can take tours of the studios, and can goto the theme parks if you're into them.

I may be bias living in NYC, but I would say to goto NYC if you haven't been there already. There is a ton to see here and great to just walk around and taking in the city.

If you're into the seedy grungy areas and want to get a lot more bang for your buck, try going to bangkok. It's similar to Tokyo, and everything costs virtually nothing. You'll be able to see some really weird stuff if you so desire. (google ping pong shows)

I've traveled a lot, been all over the world.

Tokyo for the memories and LA for the experience though does depend what style of vacation you enjoy - totally wild entertainment or taking in the sights and tourist spots.

L.A.

Because I've been to Tokyo a few times, and have never been to the U.S. Would definitely love to visit there, as I have always wanted to goto the US and possibly watch a WWE live show over there :D

Oh yea forgot about the smog in L.A and the smell, the heat and the meh people. During the 60's-80's it prolly would be really cool but doubtful anymore. I was not at all impressed. Hehe @ touring Europe, can tour the migrant camps or visit Sweden or Germany and get molested!

You could!

But you'd be a fool to think that nowhere in Europe is worth visiting now - or that everywhere has problems. Not true. As someone who has visited 4 European countries this year, 3 of them being for the first time, there's been no issues and no migrants in sight. There's some truly beautiful places to see in Europe and I'm making memories.

I understand that LA or Tokyo is one of those ''trip of a lifetime'' places to see, but they also come with a load of hype and a week there might not live up to everyone's very high expectations of those places. Also very expensive - but if you've got the money then why not. I wish I had £3500 to blow on travel though..
