Re: Dad wants daughter back after mother puts child up for adoption
A child can be adopted out without the consent of both parents? That's terrible.
I could wrap my head around it if this was allowable only when the non-custodial parent could veto adoption but refuse to be involved in the child's life, because that could be used vindictively as punishment between arguing ex-couples, but the way it works now gives the exact same result - the mother can do this to get back at the father - and, in both cases, the child becomes nothing but a tool to use against each other.
I don't understand why a court would uphold something so mean-spirited and cruel and then explain the reasoning along the lines of "Well, dad could have done a Google search". Yes, they have to adhere to the current law but there's no need to be callous about it. Anyway, this law needs to be challenged and altered; I'm no expert on American law and the Constitution but, looking in from the outside, I don't like how a father's parental rights can be erased so easily in Utah.
