What is your stance when somebody makes jokes about homosexuality, race, gender or illness?
How do you feel when somebody makes more serious homophobic, racist, sexist comments?
Homosexuality-
I'm not homosexual, nor do I closely know anybody who is homosexual, but I'm always passionately enraged when people speak of their opposition to it.
I cannot begin to understand why certain people are so strongly against others living the way they want to. What kind of person spends their life trying to devalue and make another persons life less happy?
Gender equality-
I'm equally, perhaps even innately more so, just as enraged when I hear genuine sexist comments made. For any person to think the male gender is superior due to the genitals they're born with is just pure ignorance.
First of all, please do not tell me you're an 'equalist' and not a 'feminist'; the word 'feminism' has now been riddled with so many negative connotations, in all actuality it simply means 'equality for women'. If you haven't figured it out, 'equality for women' means 'equality for all'.
I firmly believe there are double standards and injustices towards all genders, but in terms of serious oppression, women have always been coming up on the short end of the stick.
Secondly, I just want to kindly ask everybody to think more conscientiously about the sort of potentially sexist jokes you make. Whilst you may find them nonchalant, others may be rather offended by them. You may not understand why, but that doesn't mean you should continue to be knowingly disrespectful.
Race-
Now, this is a topic I don't feel as comfortable speaking on, given the fact that I am white and have never encountered any racism in my life.
That being said, I think those that harbor racist beliefs are the scum of the earth and are hatred filled humans that wish to make themselves feel superior.
I don't like to hear sexist jokes, therefore I become curious as to whether or not people mind hearing jokes made that are targeted towards their race?
I've never really found racist jokes amusing. I believe it only takes a small mind to come up with such nonsense. It's just as lazy and poor as toilet humour.
Mockery of Illness-
I never really thought about this one until recently. My mum has just come out the other end of aggressive cancer, I've seen how difficult it is for the sufferers and that it really is no joking matter.
We have made jokes about her hair loss and what not, but I would never make jokes towards others that I don't know.
When I see comedians make jokes in regards to general illness or cancer, it now kind of rubs me the wrong way. It's a sensitive issue and I don't believe it is something to just be thrown around and used as means for a cheap laugh.
I'm very curious to know how others feel about these issues. Have you ever been offended by comments made towards or around you?
