Side A of 2112 so it doesn't technically count as a concept album, but without that then Rush wouldn't be still going strong nearly 40 years on. A 20 minute song telling the record label to do one because you wont sacrifice who you are to find mainstream attention. Probably the biggest underground "unknown" band that sell out Arenas all over the world regularly.

IMO

I was going to put 2112 but decided against it because I figured someone else would, I was right lol.

Huge Beatles fan, but Pepper isn't the best. As an album itself it is among the GOAT imo. The thing is that most of the tracks don't fit the theme. In fact, 2 of the first songs recorded for the album (Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane) were not even put on the album because they were released as singles prior to the album being released.

Besides the into reprise and some other minor stuff, it's hardly a concept album.

"Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.

Close seconds are "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" by Iron Maiden and "Animals" by Pink Floyd.

And "The Wall" and "American Idiot" aren't that good as concept albums. Too many fillers.

King Diamond - Abigail and "Them" are the two greatest in my opinion.
Honourable mentions are:
Iron Maiden - Seventh son of a seventh son
Alice Cooper - Welcome to my nightmare
Macabre - Grim Scary Tales
Candlemass - Tales Of Creation

For Hip Hop I really enjoy Madlibs Quasimoto "The Unseen."

This is my FAVORITE but it's not "the best." if that makes sense.

It's a bit dated, but Dead Winter Dead by Savatage was awesome. It has story snippets in between song lyrics in the liner notes and everything. Very easy to get lost in and enjoy. Hell, it even spawned Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
