Default Feds creating database to track hate speech on Twitter

Does this bother anyone else? We are slowly losing our freedom of speech and become more like 1984. It's words on a screen, why do people get so upset over it? And detecting subversive propaganda? Don't speak out against the govt or trash either party or you may be investigated is what I see there. I'd love to know what they consider a suspicious meme. They say they will only track information, yeah right.
Thoughts on all this?

"The federal government is spending nearly $1 million to create an online database that will track “misinformation” and hate speech on Twitter.

The National Science Foundation is financing the creation of a web service that will monitor “suspicious memes” and what it considers “false and misleading ideas,” with a major focus on political activity online.

The “Truthy” database, created by researchers at Indiana University, is designed to “detect political smears, astroturfing, misinformation, and other social pollution.”

The university has received $919,917 so far for the project.

“Additionally, we will create a web service open to the public for monitoring trends, bursts, and suspicious memes.”

“This service could mitigate the diffusion of false and misleading ideas, detect hate speech and subversive propaganda, and assist in the preservation of open debate,” the grant said.

I should be able to insult Skermac outside the rants section, you're right Skermac.

To be fair the internet is a cesspool of bomb and mass shooting threats

Half of the actual killers do go on strange twitter rants about killing people before their shootings

My guess is this would be an umbrella law where the primary purpose would be to be allowed to use what you say on the internet as evidence in court

It's Fox News.

This story was clearly blown out of proportion more than an inflatophilia porno.

Making threats online can already be used as evidence in a court of law already here in the United States.

As long as a person does not make physical threats to a person or their property or use "imminent fighting" words then "hate speech" is technically protected by the First Amendment.

The problem here is that who or what defines what hate speech or misleading data or subversive propaganda is.

The government compiling opinions it disagrees with and placing itself as the arbiter of political truth... nah, nothing troubling about that. We've always been at war with Eastasia you know and if you say otherwise that's just a political smear and rest assured the gubbmint knows about it.

"Social pollution" I didn't realize we were living in Moscow circa 1936.

This is the authoritarian future unless someone stops it... say something that the powers that be don't like, you get tagged and the two minutes' hate is unleashed on you. Oh you can still express your opinion, just be sure it's the right opinion or the outrage and "fact-check" mob will come down on you. It's a free country people have the right to try to ruin your life because people have organized them to do so if you express an unacceptable opinion right? So stop whining, nothing wrong at all with well-funded organizations (with the feds backing them up) coming after you because you said something they don't like. Oh you don't think your subversive hate speech is subversive hate speech? Well look right there there you are on a government database of subversive hate speech! Guarantee this database if it ever gets up and running will only become another arrow in the quiver for people who argue not to convince or persuade but to dominate and shut up anyone who disagrees with them.

The government does have lawful purview and a vested interest in tracking down and keeping track for those who are terroristic or would promote the violent overthrow of the government. That is the government's rightful jurisdiction and job.

However, is it technically Constitutional for the government to even take sides on what is subversive propaganda or false or misleading information. Isn't the government supposed to be neutral and not a party to the exchange of political ideals or freedom of expression. I wonder if this whole concept could pass Constitutional muster if hypothetically challenged in court. Isn't it a violation of free speech when a government actor decides what constitutes "hate speech" or what is false or misleading information. The problem here is that the government would be monitoring political ideals. This is in direct contrast to one of the only times that a government has a lawful vested interest in detecting misleading information such as consumer business fraud which is something state attorney generals do for example.

Yes but legally that is conspiracy or incitement. The bar is set very high. Promoting the overthrow of the government is fine. Promoting the overthrow of the government and participating in plans to do so even if your only participation is speech is not. Promoting the overthrow of the government by telling people to go burn down the courthouse and police station right now or even next Tuesday or whatever is not. Telling them they should do that *someday* is.
