Thing is, he deserted and 6 guys died trying to find him. Pretty shitty situation.
As a former Army soldier, I am willing to wait until all facts are out on the table. However, if he deserted and it turns out he did help the Taliban, I think he should be executed.
For many years, soldiers and military people were shot on the spot for deserting. My grandfather told me a story about when he served in WW2 in the Navy. He was aboard a ship providing supplies and occasionally shooting at targets on land as they were rolling up the Italian coast to liberate Rome. One night, at a port, one of his bunkmates bailed out and told everyone he was done with the war and left.
Two days later, he was found and brought back to the shore. The captain ordered the ship to dock at this nearby port, and everyone got off the ship to witness him getting his in front of a firing squad. The captain said that this is what happens to deserters.
Now, I am more annoyed on the fact that Bergdahl originally chose to sign up. With an all-volunteer military (as opposed to the draft), these folks are choosing to risk their lives. That makes it that much more aggravating to me.
I'm sure there's more to the story, so I will wait to pass judgment.
