Today was really no different for most of us, but the OP wouldn't know this because he/she was to busy writing a novel in the rants section and responding to posters.
Certain people, including myself, did do it that way, but the overall feeling I got about this day (which is the same overall feeling I've gotten about it for the last few years) is what annoyed me. There are too many people just using this day to make others feel bad, too many people continuing to scrape stuff up and too many people who just won't leave it alone. Writing this rant took all of 5 minutes and the responses, obviously, even shorter. I don't have time, even on a fairly relaxing Sunday like it was, to dedicate to simply "write novels" and "respond to posters." Which leads to my next point...

If the OP would have went outside today and had a social life he would have seen many people living their normal lives. I didn't see people walking around with flags in their hands or shouting USA everywhere.
Neither did I (well except for the USA part, I did see some of that when I visited a mall) for the most part, but that's not what I'm talking about. I think you've let some other people's America-bashing flood over into my point, which is fine, I'm not offended really. My point is those who weren't using the day for memorial, but rather, simply using it to stir the pot.

Maybe I am sounding like bitch right now but I don't see why there is so much hate on here over this, why get riled up over people expressing happiness. People that we have never met, got to know or lived with. This whole thread just seemed counter productive to me.
And it likely seemed counter productive because you thought this thread was about getting riled up over people expressing happiness. That's not it at all. If this day could be a simple memorial with people remembering what happened and expressing happiness about their continued unity as a nation, then I'd have nothing wrong with it. That's what I wish could happen, but there are too many people in this country who simply aren't satisfied with that and need more controversy, need more conflict, need more problems. It's disrespectful and that's what my problem is.

9/11 was personal. They hated our way of life, they hated the fact we have the freedom we do, and most importantly, they hated the fact Saudi Arabi came to us for help in the Persian Gulf War instead of them, a primarily Saudi militia known as Al Queda. You may have heard of them...

Also because a good majority of the victims were fire fighters and police officers who represent the courage and will of the "American spirit" which isn't silly by any means regardless of your foreign opinion. They were good honest hard-working Americans just doing their jobs, all of various religious and political beliefs that died that day as a result of someone's personal hatred of America's culture and global affairs, which much like your opinion of the 9/11 memorial tributes, didn't concern them either.

That's why it's a "patriotic" affair when the 9/11 stuff comes up and it's not hard for any American with half a grain of common sense to figure out.

I'm comparing innocent people killed in terrorist attacks to the innocent civillians who've lost their lives since you invaded their country you arrogant wanker. Again, no idea why you're bringing up Australia, insecure much?
So now we're name-calling? Great way to make a point here. You know what's really arrogant? A foreigner claiming he knows more about American media and their motives than an American or at least anyone who actually watches it.

And if Iraqis wants to declare their own little national mourning day to honor the deaths of all the civilians that were killed during the war, that's their choice. I wouldn't have a problem with it. But that's up to them, not us. You said it yourself they have much more to mourn than that, so they should really be thanking us for sparing them from most of that. But that's another issue.

According to that news anchor who said "unfortunately" the Flight 93 tapes couldn't be released, apparently not. Apparently that's not good enough.

That's not the problem, and that's not at all what I or anyone else who's agreeing with me is addressing in this rant. It's the fact that 1) we're exploiting it and 2) there are people going around just trying to stir the pot, being antagonistic, trying to convict other people. "Did you forget? Did you?" It's not 9/11: Remember. It's 9/11: Never Forget. It's not unity. It's not helping anyone band together. Instead of leaving it to memorial, we're going around making sure other people don't forget by releasing new footage, new tapes, groundbreaking interviews. We can't let the day rest in peace. That's our problem.
It's no coincidence that most of the people "agreeing with you" don't even live in this country. Maybe you should think about that. And as I said, you have the option to leave this country if it sincerely bothers you so much. If you disagree with the idea of "unity" and feel so terrible for the victims in other parts of the world, move there. You wouldn't even have the freedom in those other places to spout anti-government spite like you're doing here all day. You made the choice to let it bother you which ultimately means you can't even handle the freedom this country allows you to have.

And what are these "new" tapes and interviews you keep bringing up? I watched a ton of the coverage and I didn't see anything new. And I find it seriously hard to believe you did either considering you obviously had such a problem with all of it.

BTW... the Flight 93 recordings haven't been released and will never be released because it was shot down. You would actually make a better case ranting about that if you even knew what you were talking about.

I wouldn't bash the Aussies for singing and cheering during a cricket game. Or Argentinians during a soccer match.
Dead-on post right here. Agreed 100%.

You honestly think the NFL, the most popular sport in America, has to pull stunts like that to get ratings on the first Sunday Night Football game of the season?

Really?

Re: DID YOU FORGET?

enough of the multi quoting since i only need one point which i've said but you conveniently ignored. If this day was only about honouring the dead then i have no problem with that. I have no problem with crediting the hard work and sacrificies all the firefighters, police, civilians put in to try to help and save people. I have no problem with that being brought up every year because it is damn sure important. Just like we have Anzac Day, and Remembrance day. I have no problem with it being treated as a national day of mourning and to honour the fallen. However, this day isn't entirely about that and that is what i have a problem with.

In fact up until this year for the past 5 years, there has been increasingly light mention of 9/11 on it's anniversary, and no one was complaining about "excess patriotism" until the NYC decided to do the whole 9/11 memorial thing for the 10th anniversary and everyone else jumped on board with it.

Actually, no, it isn't that at all (speaking personally about myself, not sure about others, but think a lot of people share this same view). It has nothing to do with feeling depressed and everything to do with the media fucking talking about it to death. The media makes huge deals of a lot of things. Of course there wont be gigantic talk about it when it isn't a one year anniversary, 10 year anniversary, 20 year anniversary....no one really gives much of a shit about those anniversaries in between but when it hits the first year and then each decade, it is always going to be a big deal to people because they are 'milestones'.

If people want to remember, cool, there is no problem with that, but when it's talked about more than it needs to be, people need to shut the fuck up. Unless you had a family member die, you didn't lose anything and you don't cry at night over it, so get on with life and quit acting like you were just impregnated by a fat, old racist with a mole on his face.

My opinion, anyways.

You can't honestly tell me that you don't think at least a little of it was planned because of 9/11. NY just happens to play in NY on 9/11.....come on.

Re: DID YOU FORGET?

Well 9/11 fell on a Sunday and half of New York's games are home games and there are two New York teams and they share the same stadium so the odds of a New York team playing at home on 9/11 was almost 100%.
