~WWE Post Royal Rumble News, Notes and Spoilers~
Edge was considered a surprise choice to win the Royal Rumble last night, however it was Vince McMahon personally who decided that Edge was to be part of the main event of Wrestlemania this year. Determined to firmly establish Edge as a major part of the main event roster, Edge is scheduled to face John Cena in the main event of Wrestlemania 23, as of this moment. Having engaged in several classic bouts throughout 2006, the current plan is for the Mania match to be pushed as a last time ever match, a battle to finally end their feud once and for all. One way or another, the creative team is determined to have Edge's opponent firmly established by the No Way Out pay per view in three weeks time. With Edge now set to move back into the singles ranks, expect he and Randy Orton to drop the World Tag Team Titles, perhaps as soon as the Raw: Night Of Champions 3-hour special in eight days time.
Having both retained their titles last night, John Cena and Batista appear to be locks to head into Wrestlemania as champions of their respective shows. With both heavyweight championships being held by babyfaces, the decision to have a heel Edge win the Royal Rumble gained ground over recent days. Challengers for both champions in the mean time will be established to tide both men until after No Way Out. Expect a challenger for Batista's World Heavyweight Championship at No Way Out to be determined quickly. After being the last man eliminated in the Royal Rumble, The Undertaker is the early favourtie for the role. Also in the frame are Mr. Kennedy, despite his altercation with Ric Flair, as are Kane and MVP, who look set to end their feud decivsivly on Smackdown this Friday.
Speaking of Kennedy and Flair, it appears they will clash at Wrestlemania 23 in an inter-promotional match. Having recently complained about veterans holding him back, it appears the feud with Flair has been slowly simmering over the recent weeks on Smackdown. Just how the dispute will be advanced with both men being different shows remains to be seen. The fact that Flair's Wrestlemania match appears set would almost certainly rule out any chance Flair and his new ally Carlito had of winning the World Tag Team Championships from Edge and Orton.
Triple H and Shawn Michaels seem destined to be involved in a match together at Wrestlemania in some shape or form, but the current direction of their match is still up in the air. Although the pair have craved greater creative control over their feud, the fact that neither man has firmly established himself as a heel sugests the pair could re-unite but not under the DX banner to face a new team, or the could both remain faces but be invovled in a possible multi man WWE Championship match. Expect the direction of their feud to become clear in the upcoming weeks.
Many of the undercard matches at Wrestlemania have already been established, but one man in particular who still lacks an opponent is The Undertaker. With no clear choices on Smackdown to face The Deadman, it may mean a Raw Superstar is given the honour of breaking the infamous Wrestlemania streak. Ideas being tossed around include a second attempt at breaking the streak for Randy Orton, to new Intercontinental Champion Kenny Dykstra stepping up in an attempt to establish him as the next break out star, to a heel turn and feud with The Undertaker for Carlito or Bobby Lashley. Other names being considered are Umaga, Finlay, MVP and the outside consideration, a heel CM Punk.
Having boosted both the tag team and cruiserweight divisions on Smackdown, attention has now turned to re-establishing the tag and women's division over on Raw. One team set to soon make their debut on the red brand is that of Hart Dungeon graduates Harry Smith and TJ Wilson. Expect Smith's cousin Nattie Neidhart to also make her debut as part of the group. The more experienced tag team of Deuce 'N' Domino are also expected to appear on Raw in the near future, and a long awaited return from injury for Beth Phoenix has also been rumoured over recent weeks. One further team is set to be added to the Smackdown brand, as former ECW Sueprstars Elijah Burke and Monty Brown will soon be introduced as a unit.
