A Straight Punk Edges out Layfield
For one reason or another CM Punk has had to prove himself as World Heavyweight Champion since cashing the Money in the Bank contract. Up until SummerSlam, in the minds of many, Punk was yet to do so. He was yet to win a championship match in a manner that proved without question he should be on top. John Bradshaw Layfield was at one time the longest reigning champion on SmackDown and still holds that record. He saw his opportunity to reclaim the championship at SummerSlam. However, he would come unstuck in the match that CM Punk needed. CM Punk’s win will shut up some of the doubters for now but in the up coming weeks towards Unforgiven there will be a number of men who look to take the Straightedge's spot. The man he beat last night at SummerSlam will have a chance to extract some retribution, as JBL will team up with the World Tag Team Champions, Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes to take on the World Champion and the team of Shad Gaspard and JTG known as Cryme Tyme. This will also be an ample opening for the team from the streets to put themselves in contention for a World Tag Team Championship match in the near future.
Triumph of an Animal
John Cena said that the match was worthy of a WrestleMania main event. He and Batista proved that last night,, as in an epic encounter it was The Animal who came out on top. The first time that these two met, it could have gone ether way. It did go the way of Batista when John Cena went out of his comfort zone and tried a leg drop from the top rope but was caught with a devastating Batista Bomb. It took one more to put Cena away but he did. No doubt that these two will have a rematch someday down the line but as for now both men will be looking to move onto the World Heavyweight Championship. Can these two wait for the perfect moment for a rematch or will it come sooner rather than later?
Wrong Place, Wrong Time
In what was supposed to be an emotional moment for Shawn Michaels at SummerSlam when he announced his retirement due to an eye injury. However, Chris Jericho could not stand by and allow Michaels to have his moment with the crowd and his wife. Jericho demanded that HBK tell the world that it was only Jericho that ended his career nobody else. HBK admitted it was a vile vindictive man who ended his career but The Showstopper told Jericho that no matter what he did Jericho would never be Shawn Michaels. This clearly hit a nerve with Jericho who proceeded to throw a punch but missed HBK and laid out Rebecca Michaels, an innocent bystander of this rivalry. Jericho and HBK did not fight as neither man seemed to know how to react. This week on Raw Chris Jericho will respond to his actions and what happened. However, Shawn Michaels will not be in the arena but he will join via Satellite from his home in San Antonio where he is tending to his wife.
The hottest new couple on Raw ‘Glamarella’ had a prolific night at the biggest party of the summer. Both Santino and Beth Phoenix walked out of SummerSlam with the Intercontinental and Women’s Championships respectively. Santino really had little to do with claiming the title but did not hide his elation when he was carried out on the back of his girlfriend carrying the championship. Kofi Kingston who was not pinned to lose the championship will have his rematch on Raw this Monday night. A match that Santino must prove that he deserves to be Intercontinental Champion.
The Five Extremists
In the wake of the demise of ECW most of the superstars are left without a home to apply their trade. However, as announced on wwe.com, ten of those competitors will find homes this week. On this upcoming Monday Night Raw we will see the effect that has on the dynamic of the brand. The top five names that have been moved over to Raw will make themselves be known on this episode. The possibilities are endless and Raw could end up with some of the biggest up and comers like, Evan Bourne or Elijah Burke, or even end up with the last remaining originals in Stevie Richards and Tommy Dreamer. Will the superstars show happiness to be being moved to Raw or will they be upset at losing their home on Tuesday Nights?
