Legendary Killer

I'm just starting out with photoshop and cutting out subjects. I have heard of some techniques such as the lasso tools, and using masks. But I'm still a beginner at it.

My question is: What are the easiest/best ways to cut something from an image. I'd prefer answers from those who are pros at this. Links to tutorials would be nice.
