PatMan Presents: WWE 2006 Revisited

PatMan Presents: WWE 2006 Revisited
2006 was a year that could have been one of the best in WWE history. But instead, the addition of ECW took talent from Raw and Smackdown, with the company going from two very good brands to three sub-par brands. But what if things had happened differently?? What if Batista and Mr. Kennedy never missed more than half a year due to injury?? What if ECW never came into the fold?? What if Kurt Angle was granted a lighter schedule and never left?? I guess we could say things would be much different … and now we revisit history. History was changed after New Year’s Revolution.
Raw Notes:
~ Edge is the WWE Champion, fresh off cashing in his MITB title shot, beating John Cena.
~ Kurt Angle was never forced to leave Raw to help Smackdown; he will be in the Royal Rumble.
~ The whole Vince McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels storyline was dropped, with Michaels being placed in the Rumble.
~ Jonathan Coachman was officially named Raw General Manager.
Smackdown Notes:
~ Undertaker returned after Hell in a Cell, with Randy Orton keeping his distance from The Deadman.
~ Batista never suffered an injury at the hands of Mark Henry, and he will face Da’ Silva’back at the Royal Rumble with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
~Chris Benoit suffered an injury in the six match in the best of seven series with Booker T. Booker won the US Championship, with Benoit being out indefinitely. Benoit will not be used in this thread.
~ Danny Basham returned to Smackdown, officially reuniting the Cabinet, along with JBL, Orlando Jordan, Doug Basham, and Jillian Hall
~ Ken Kennedy never hurt his back; he has qualified for the Royal Rumble match.
Royal Rumble 2006
Cruiserweight Championship Match:
Kid Kash vs. Paul London
Paul London had all the momentum coming into this match, defeating Jamie Noble and Nunzio in a Triple Threat Number One Contender’s match on Smackdown to earn the title shot. London used almost every move in his arsenal to take Kash down but in the end, London got caught off guard, with Kash rolling London up and using the ropes to retain the belt.
Winner: Kid Kash
Grudge Match; Special Guest Referee: Trish Stratus
Mickie James vs. Ashley Massaro
These two had been at each other’s throats for a while, with Trish finally stepping between them. Mickie won after a Mick Kick, getting the pinfall, which she hoped would be enough to impress Trish.
Winner: Mickie James
One on One:
John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield vs. The Boogeyman
The Boogeyman was undefeated heading into the match but that would end, with the entire Cabinet getting involved, with Orlando taking the bullet for JBL, eating worms on the outside, with JBL hitting the Clothesline From Hell to get the pinfall.
Winner: John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield
WWE Championship Match:
Edge vs. John Cena
Edge was being called a ‘transitional champion’ due to the fact that he was opportunistic in winning the WWE Championship. Edge said that he would prove the critics wrong, and he was able to retain the belt against Ric Flair in a TLC match on Raw. At the Rumble, Cena looked set to win the belt he had held for nine months … but Lita was able to distract the referee, with Edge nailing a low blow!!! Edge then hit the spear and got the victory by pinfall, pretty much cementing his spot in the WrestleMania 22 main event.
Winner: Edge
World Heavyweight Championship Match:
Batista vs. Mark Henry
Mark Henry had dominated Batista in the weeks leading up to the Royal Rumble, cementing himself as the number one contender. Batista would need to put his best effort forward, taking it to the bigger man, finally finishing the match with a spine buster to somehow retain the championship.
Winner: Batista
The Royal Rumble Match
The first shock of the match came when JOHN CENA took out Scotty Too Hotty backstage and took his number in the match. Cena came out on fire, getting five quick eliminations before he set his sights on Shawn Michaels. Cena had HBK on his shoulder for the F-U, looking for the elimination … but Michaels slipped off the shoulders … SWEET CHIN MUSIC FOR THE ELIMINATION!!! Cena then came back in later, throwing Michaels over the top and using the steel steps on the outside, busting HBK wide open and ending his WM22 championship dreams.
The final four in the match were Ken Kennedy, Rob Van Dam, Triple H, and Randy Orton. Kennedy was the first to go, eliminated courtesy of Triple H. Orton and Triple H then teamed together to eliminate Van Dam, getting the match down to just Orton and Triple H. The two went back and forth for a few minutes, with both men barely staying alive. In the end, Triple H went for the Pedigree but Orton nailed a low blow … AND THEN AN RKO!!! Orton grabbed Triple H and dumped him over the top, winning the 2006 Royal Rumble!!!
Winner: Randy Orton

No Way Out 2006
WWE Tag Team Championship Match:
MNM vs. The Mexicools
Super Crazy & Psicosis defeated The Hooligans on an episode of Smackdown to earn this title shot. The cruiserweights used their incredible quickness to their advantage early but Melina ended up being the deciding factor, distracting Super Crazy while Mercury dumped Psicosis outside the ring, before MNM hit the Snapshot on Crazy to get the pinfall.
Winners: MNM
Grudge Match:
Finlay vs. The Boogeyman
Finlay was the one who made fun of The Boogeyman for eating worms, even shoving worms down his throat after a tag team match, leading to this singles contest. Boogeyman used his strength in the early going but Finlay’s technical ability proved to be too much as he hit a Celtic Cross for the pinfall.
Winner: Finlay
Cruiserweight Championship Match:
Kid Kash vs. Jamie Noble
Jamie Noble recently turned face after he defied Kid Kash and told him he would not help the CW Champ in a match against Juvi. Later that night, Kash attacked Noble during his match with Nunzio, making this match at the PPV official. Noble put up a great fight but then took one too many risks, missing a crossbody from the top. Kash took control of the match and was about to hit the brainbuster … but Noble slipped out and cradled the champion for the pinfall!!!
Winner: Jamie Noble
Tag Team Match:
The Hooligans vs. The Bluebloods
Regal and Burchill screwed London and Kendrick out of a tag team title shot against the Mexicools, leading to Teddy Long making this match. The two teams had a great clash of styles, possibly out-doing the match between MNM and the Mexicools earlier. London looked set to the hit the 450 Splash but Burchill knocked the ropes, causing London to crash to the mat. Kendrick got taken down by Regal on the outside, allowing Burchill to hit the C-4 from the top on London, getting the pinfall.
Winners: The Bluebloods
Cabinet Challenge; Handicap Match:
Rey Mysterio vs. The Basham Brothers
In the weeks after the Royal Rumble, JBL screwed Rey out of two matches. Rey said that he wanted JBL at No Way Out, but Bradshaw said no. Rey was then put into a match against Orlando Jordan, which Rey won. JBL then said that he would face Rey in the future IF Mysterio could beat the Basham Brothers in a handicap match. Rey was able to keep himself in the match, until the rest of the Cabinet came down to the ring, with JBL joining Cole and Tazz on commentary. Rey looked to be done before be moved out of the way of a clothesline attempt from Danny, which actually ended up taking out Doug. Rey then took over the match, hitting the 619 to get the pinfall, and a future match with JBL.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
United States Championship; Triple Threat Match:
Booker T vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Matt Hardy
Teddy Long made this match after Booker interfered in a match between Lashley and Hardy. All three men were able to showcase their abilities, but in the end Booker was able to cheat his way to victory, using the US Title belt on both men while Sharmell had the referee distracted, pinning Matt Hardy to retain the belt.
Winner: Booker T
Randy Orton’s Championship Decision:
In the weeks after the Royal Rumble, Randy Orton would not tell anyone which title he was going after at WrestleMania 22. Finally, Vince McMahon appeared on Smackdown and told Orton that he would need to make up his decision by No Way Out, or he would not get any title match. Both Jonathan Coachman and Teddy Long were present for the contract signing. Randy talked about both championships, saying that he could beat Edge, Batista, or The Undertaker at WrestleMania 22. After some deliberation, Orton said sorry to Coach … AND SIGNED THE SMACKDOWN CONTRACT!!! Randy Orton said he needs to win the World Heavyweight Championship to prove he was not a fluke champion.
Randy Orton will face the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22
World Heavyweight Championship Match:
Batista vs. The Undertaker
After getting eliminated somewhat early in the Royal Rumble, The Undertaker set his sights on winning the belt before WM22. Batista, ever the fighting champion, told The Deadman he could have a shot at the belt. Both men remained fan favorites heading into the match, with both men claiming to be the best. The actual match was a classic. A fast-paced contest between two of the best athletes in the world. Batista threw everything he could at The Undertaker, but The Phenom would not go down. Undertaker would hit a huge chokeslam and then look to end the match with a Tombstone but the referee was down. This led to MARK HENRY coming to the ring and attacking The Undertaker. The two brawled around ringside before Undertaker was able to win the exchange and roll back into the ring … ONLY TO BE SPEARED BY BATISTA!!! Batista hit a spine buster and then finished the match with the Batista Bomb, successfully retaining his World Heavyweight Championship.
Winner: Batista

WrestleMania 22
Money in the Bank Ladder Match:
Ric Flair vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Carlito vs. Ken Kennedy vs. Gregory Helms vs. Finlay
**NOTE - Gregory Helms is the Intercontinental Champion after defeating Ric Flair for the belt in February.**
These six men all won qualifying matches on their respective shows to get into the match. Ken Kennedy was the boldest heading into the match, saying he would win the match and then cash in the same night. These six all put their bodies on the line, with tons of big spots throughout. In the end, Ken Kennedy looked set to win the match, only for Carlito to battle Kennedy on the top, with both men hitting the floor, allowing Ric Flair to get up the ladder and grab the briefcase!!! Bobby Lashley suffered a broken ankle, keeping him out of action for two months.
Winner: Ric Flair
WWE Tag Team Championships; Four Corners Match:
MNM vs. The Mexicools vs. The Hooligans vs. The Bluebloods
After the two tag team matches at No Way Out, no clear number contender emerged, prompting Teddy Long to make a four-way match at WrestleMania. London & Kendrick had the most momentum heading into the match, with London pinning Nitro CLEANLY the Smackdown before WM22. The match was given decent time and in the end, MNM hit the Snapshot on Brian Kendrick to shockingly retain the titles, cementing themselves as possibly the best tag team in the entire WWE.
Winners: MNM
Women’s Championship Match:
Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James
This match was over five months in the making, with Mickie winning a divas battle royal to get another shot at Trish’s title. Mickie remained Trish’s biggest fan until Saturday Night’s Main Event, when, after being tag team partners, she turned on her hero with a post-match beatdown. In the match, Mickie proved why she is one of the best divas in the WWE, hitting the Mickie DDT to pin the champion CLEANLY and win the belt.
Winner: Mickie James
One on One:
John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield vs. Rey Mysterio
{The Cabinet is barred from ringside}
Teddy Long added the stipulation of no Cabinet at ringside after JBL said that he would always have backup against Rey. The Cabinet did all they could to put Mysterio at a disadvantage before WrestleMania, including a beatdown two nights before WM22. Even with a huge size disadvantage, Rey was able to overcome the ‘Wrestling God,’ hitting the 619 and then Droppin’ Da’ Dime for the three count.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
World Tag Team Championship Match:
The Big Show & Kane vs. The World’s Greatest Tag Team
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin officially reunited on the Raw after No Way Out. Proving to be a team on a mission, the WGTT was able to get one over on the tag champs, as Shelton beat Kane in a singles match. The match was made for WrestleMania and the dominant duo of The Big Show and Kane proved to be too much, finally defeating the defiant challengers, with Big Show chokeslamming Haas for the three count.
Winners: The Big Show & Kane
United States Championship Match:
Booker T vs. Matt Hardy
Matt Hardy got pinned by Booker T at No Way Out, but took exception to the fact that Booker used the US Title belt. After refusing to face Hardy again, Booker was finally forced to face Matt in a non-title match. Matt won by DQ after Sharmell interfered, prompting Teddy Long to make a match between Booker and Hardy at WM22. Booker T and Sharmell tried their best to keep Hardy off the offensive but Hardy eventually hit the Twist of Fate to get the pinfall and his first United States Championship.
Winner: Matt Hardy
Casket Match:
The Undertaker vs. Mark Henry
After screwing The Undertaker out of the World Heavyweight Championship, Mark Henry told the world that he would be the man to end the famous streak of The Deadman. Undertaker returned two weeks later and said that Mark Henry would need to defeat him in a special match … A CASKET MATCH!!! Mark Henry physically dominated Undertaker in the run-up to WM22 and was the man who had nothing to lose on April 2nd. In the match, Mark Henry was able to get Undertaker inside the casket numerous times but was never able to close the lid. As always, Undertaker was able to come back and he hit the Tombstone, rolling Henry into the casket and running his WM record to 14-0. This would be Henry’s final match with the WWE.
Winner: The Undertaker
The Doctor of Thuganomics vs. The Showstopper:
John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels
In possibly the biggest singles match in the last few years, the future of the WWE met the past and present of the company as John Cena would go one-on-one with Shawn Michaels. Cena turned into a full-blown heel, blaming the fans for supporting him for so long and then just changing their minds when he proved his dominance. Shawn Michaels was able to use his veteran instinct to dominate the majority of the match and was even able to kick out of the F-U. Michaels later went for Sweet Chin Music but was caught unexpectedly, with Cena locking in the STF-U for a HUGE submission victory on the grandest stage of them all.
Winner: John Cena
WWE Championship; Fatal Four Way Match:
Edge vs. Triple H vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Kurt Angle
After Edge retained against John Cena at the Royal Rumble, Jonathan Coachman started to towards the Raw WM22 main event, making an eight-man Road to WrestleMania tournament. Shawn Michaels and John Cena cost each other victories, with The Big Show and Kane both advancing. Elsewhere, Triple H beat Ric Flair and Rob Van Dam beat Kurt Angle. The finals featured Triple H and Rob Van Dam but no winner was decided as KURT ANGLE interfered, making the match a no contest. Kurt Angle was able to force Jonathan Coachman to add him to the WM22 main event, making the match a Fatal Four Way. In the weeks leading up the biggest show of the year, each of the four was able to prove that they could be the victor on April 2nd. Would RVD win his first World Championship?? Could Triple H become an eleven-time champion?? Did Kurt Angle have the ability to reach the top again?? Can Edge keep his first World Championship reign going??
The actual match was a classic to say the least. The Chicago crowd was obviously split between the four men, with each wrestler getting cheered at various points in the match. The match ended up going over twenty-five minutes, with all four men barely missing out on victory. In the end, Edge took advantage of a Five Star from RVD to Triple H and with Kurt Angle already outside the ring, Edge caught Van Dam by surprise with a huge spear to get the three count and retain the title.
Winner: Edge
World Heavyweight Championship Match:
Batista vs. Randy Orton
After the decision at No Way Out, the stage was set for one of the biggest matches in Smackdown history. On one side, the man who was coming off one of the best years in recent history, the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble, the number one contender, Randy Orton. On the other side, the man who has held the World Heavyweight Championship for one full year, the most popular wrestler on the planet, Batista. After announcing his intentions for WM22, Randy Orton came out week after week, telling everyone that he would be World Champion again. Batista and Orton met several time in tag team matches but never had much time in the ring together. Just two days before WM22, Randy Orton told Batista that he has never faced a challenger quite like The Legend Killer, a man who represented the Evolution of the wrestling business.
The match was very worthy of a main event spot at WrestleMania; this being the first time since 2003 that Vince had allowed Smackdown to go on last. The two methodically wore each other down, proving that they both would stop at nothing for the title. After numerous failed pin attempts, Orton became frustrated and played right into Batista’s hands, when The Animal became the dominant aggressor. Batista hit a spear and then a spine buster but damage to his knee earlier in the match prevented him from finishing the match fast enough. Batista finally got Orton into position for the Batista Bomb, a move that had put so many down before but then Orton shocked the world, slipping out of the position … RKO!!! Orton made the cover and became the World Heavyweight Champion for the second time in his career, pinning Batista CLEANLY in the center of the ring to end the show.
Winner: Randy Orton
