Default Re: Official WWE DVD Help/Discussion/Review Thread

Austin101's WWF Royal Rumble 1989 Review:

This time around the Rumble match consists of 30 men and this time around it's back in the states, it's on PPV and Monsoon does the commentary with Jesse other then Vince.

A rather short PPV with a not so good undercard to say the least so this review wont be very long.

1) Jim Duggan and The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) VS Dino Bravo and The Fabulous Rougeaus (Jacques and Raymond) (w/Frenchy Martin and Jimmy Hart) in a Two out of three falls match

Bret and Jim move around good like they always do in this match and it's a 6 man tag. Some alright action to begin but it never really picks up enough for my liking although the crowd was hot. Raymond pinned Bret after the Bombe de Rougeau at 4:22 for the first fall.

When Jim Duggan gets tagged in you'd think Bret Hart just made a come back to the WWE in Montreal, Canada. Duggan pinned Raymond after an elbow drop at 11:46 for the second fall to tie up the score at 1 for both teams.

These teams battled some more and Bret "The Hitman" Hart pinned Dino Bravo after "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan knocked Bravo out with his 2x4 at 15:42 for the third and final fall to win it for the team.

** 1/2

2) Rockin' Robin VS Judy Martin for the WWF Women's Championship

The only thing worse then watching these two ladies wrestle would be to hear Sherri's commentary during it. And for the match to be long. Uh oh.....

Robin pinned Martin after a flying crossbody from the second rope at 16:24. Yes....16:24, the match went far to long for one that no one really cared about. Oh and Sensational Sherri would do commentary for this match and challenged the winner of it who ended up being Robin (as if there was any doubt due to her constantly bashing her)

3) The Ultimate Warrior defeated Rick Rude (w/Bobby Heenan) in a posedown

Such great action here, these two guys were on the rise here in early 1989 and I was entertained, that's all that matters. Look out Steamboat-Flair!

..............

kidding quite obvioussly.

I wont rate this crap, moving on.....god does this undercard suck.

4) King Haku (w/Bobby Heenan) VS "Former King" Harley Race (w/Bobby Heenan)

A kind of slow match but that doesen't neccessarily make it bad...it just kind of was. But it wasn't terrible. Not by any means at all, especially when you got Race in there (although past his prime) things are still decent at best. The night just seemed to drag up to the rumble match for me...Haku pinned Race after a reverse thrust kick at 9:01.

* 3/4

5) Main-Event "The 1989 Royal Rumble Match"

Fans were kind of new to this type of match at the time, this was the first one with 30 men entering the ring and looking back it's a shame they didn't have the "winner gets a trip to Mania" storyline from the beginning. (although thank god they didn't given who won the first two)

This bout started with Axe and Smash of Demolition (what a way to show it was RANDOM DRAWING eh?) But at least it was kind of unique and fun to see the two go at it (much like the hardyz in 01 although they weren't 1 and 2) Andre comes out third and the team teams up on him. A lot of strategy used in this match in comparison to other rumble's, well I guess 1991 did a lot of this to but more on that event later when I review it.

Jake the Snake gets a good pop at entry #7.

The Warlord was the fastest person to ever be eliminated (I believe still is) at 2 or 3 seconds by Hogan by a clothesline right over the top upon entering.

Hogan obvioussly gets a great pop when he comes in and he eliminated 9 men which was a record at the time including fellow mega power-Savage setting up the WM 5 title bout. Savage was champion here and shoves Hogan till Elizabeth cools the Mega-Power jets and the two shake hands and Savage leaves the ring area.

In the end it was Big John Studd who eliminated Ted Dibiase to win the 1989 Royal Rumble at 1:04:53.

I'll never understand why people say Hacksaw Jim Duggan was always the "forgotten" rumble winner. Not only was he the first one (so that automatically means he should be remembered) but he was more over then Studd when it comes down to it. I NEVER, EVER hear ANYONE, EVER talk about Big John Studd's rumble victory. But I guess that just goes to show you why in my mind THIS MAN is the forgotten Rumble winner.

Not a bad rumble but not by any means a great one either.

** 3/4

Final PPV Rating for RR 89= 6/10

I'm getting more generous with my PPV ratings as a 6/10 is a very decent rating for a not a good PPV, however this was a Royal Rumble and it's very hard for them to dissapoint, especially ones in the Old School.

Up Next from Austin101:

-WWF Royal Rumble 1990 (Stay tuned...)

Feedback appreciated as always...
