Feel bad about living so rent free inside your head. Bet you're already getting nervous for June when Messi is destined to pull off another choke job in an Argentine shirt. Don't worry though, the cock sucking media will protect him as usual.

That sounds tremendously fascinating. Hope you score fantastically well with your thesis but I'm sure you will!

Ah, what is the study for your thesis on, if I may inquire? :)

I'm going well! For much of the time you were gone I had a nasty cold but I got over that quickly and now feel as bright and chipper as ever! :posey2

We're sort of having an Australian February here in California at the moment with warm temperatures every day. :lol

    Welcome back, Rush! 8*D

    How's it going?

Just watched the 2015 The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and thoroughly enjoyed it! :mark:

Cavill, Hammer and Vikander were all quite winning in their parts. (Y)

I picked back up with season 8 of 24 this week. Was glad to see them bring back the Renee Walker character, but with a darker take this time. In fact, at eight episodes in, the Renee/Jack/Vladimir story is the only one that really interests me at this point. Dana's crazy ex-con boyfriend returning to make her steal money for him has me engaged, but only because I hope Freddie Prinze Jr. kills his ass later in the season.

Pretty weak start overall, but here's hoping it improves.

Look out for Fritz Weaver giving a great performance in the first episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s second season!

Thoroughly enjoyable show! The shift to higher production values, including color, is quite noticeable from Season 1 to Season 2. :)

Haha, I surely hope they don't kill off Luke in order to have Kylo Ren "get his heat back" for what happened toward the end of The Force Awakens. :lol Like you say, they've' arguably already gone to that well vis-à-vis Solo's death, and I personally would like to see Luke stick around for the remainder of this trilogy, at least, even if his role is perhaps dramatically reduced from "Episode VIII" to "Episode IX." There are many ways for Kylo Ren to enjoy the advantage over Rey, et. al. And, again, like you, I still want more information concerning all of these characters' earlier comings and goings, which I expect we'll get a good heaping of in the next film with more backstories.

Ha, yes, it's going to be a long wait, though at least only half as long as all previous Star Wars trilogies' installment-to-installment waits. J.J. Abrams has said that the screenplay for the next film is so good that he wishes he were directing it. That is encouraging. Hope it's great!

Hoping also that Luke's involvement is as epical as this film's coda seemed to promise. Not only to build up Rey, while gifting her with a greater struggle going forward, but also to, as you point out, flesh out precisely what occurred with Luke and Kylo Ren, etceteras, well before the events of this film took place.

And like you, I think that this film was a nearly wholly successful revamping of everything that made the original trilogy endearing, and it certainly provided plenty of excellent possibilities for its major characters, good and bad, alike.

It really falls to the next film to make this one even better. Recall those little moments of dialogue between Luke's aunt and uncle discussing Luke's father and the uncle saying that he fears Luke has too much of his father in him. It was, at first blush, utterly innocuous, but it provided ample foreshadowing, as did other bits and pieces. So it may be that at least some of what we saw will become rewarding to see following the sequel's release.

I look forward to see those scenes again, though, anyway, in a few days as I see it again, ha.

And, yes, Finn's characterization won me over mostly because I thought Boyega was quite effective in his role, but I'm hoping for more backstory and information pertaining to his time as a stormtrooper. Nevertheless, I liked the character, mainly for the sheer likability that the actor projected. Like you, I'm not sure how large or small a role Poe, the pilot, will be going forward, but I completely enjoyed him.

In any event, yes, it would be good to learn more about the First Order and Snoke. I'm guessing we'll be given plenty of time with the villains in the next installment for the development of Kylo Ren about which I spoke earlier this evening. My own modest theory is that Rey's visions were a mélange of the present and future, and the future vision was of Kylo Ren and his "Knights of Ren" out in the rain, somewhere, being quite villainous indeed.

Firstly, I couldn't agree more with you about your hopes for Rey, and how you don't want her to become a simplistic and excessively overt demonstration of feminist ideals. I actually find it funny because I had the same concerns stemming from and criticisms of the bit with Rey refusing Finn's hand as they were running away from stormtroopers--it was in at least one of my first two or three posts on the film. :lol Not that I'm necessarily opposed to her being that strong, at all. She's a scavenger who lives on a desolate desert planet, living a thoroughly rough life. It just seemed like the writers and/or director were going overboard in making a showcase for Rey's potentially feminist bona fides. That was the crux of my problem with those scenes--not even the message itself but the clumsiness in the conveying of it. And yet, I don't think they completely overdid it, either, and at least it was largely for a kind of comic relief, of a sort (while developing the characters).

They certainly opened the door for Kylo Ren being a villain that still needs to develop and truly "master the Force" or what have you. So it'll be intriguing to see a villain become stronger throughout the overall arc of the trilogy rather than simply be introduced as an imposing, unstoppable entity like Vader.

As you note, it was unmistakably clear that they wanted to separate this entirely from the prequels, maybe even to a fault (the nearly complete lack of political exposition, for instance).

What else are you looking forward to?

Yes, terrific points. While I was watching the film I took it as almost implicitly promised that Kylo Ren and the gang of villains will extract some terrible revenge for the immediate comeuppance he and they receive for their wickedness near the end of The Force Awakens. It will have been a major mistake if that revenge does not come.

Conversely, Rey surely needs to struggle quite a bit in this second chapter. As you note, the filmmakers have definitively laid a foundation for something of a "redux" of the trilogy, with the highs and lows, as you state, of the Empire/Republic battle, likely to play out in similar up-->down-->up trajectory.

That's great about your holidays, Rush. Yes, mine were great as well; thanks! :)

My thoughts on The Force Awakens mirror most of yours. I wrote several posts on it in that spoiler thread, haha. I do think the criticism that many story beats stem from the New Hope template is valid, but there were enough differences and at least modestly original bits of character development and connective tissue, along with the thrill ride storyline being sufficiently fun, with the new characters impressing me enough to make me embrace it, little flaws and all. So, yeah, thumbs up from me. (Y)

Hoping we get considerably more background information on the First Order, the state of the Republic, and all of the new characters and what's transpired with Luke over the past generation or so, without it being Exposition City, of course, haha.
