Carpenter's last great movie that I saw was In the Mouth of Madness. Pretty big fan of him. Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, STARMAN, In the Mouth of Madness. Great stuff. Then you a few good action comedies like They Live and Big Trouble in Little China.

Jon Hamm is in We Were Soldiers issuing MAD MEL'S orders via radio before anyone knew who the fuck he was so that automatically makes it the greatest Nam movie ever by virtue of having Don Draper in it. Actually Opie from SOA is in it too now that I think of it.
But really its kind of a lame movie which isn't surprising because Chris Klein is in it, but he dies 2/3rds in. Mel was pretty decent in it though, otherwise you aren't missing much.
There is a scene in that movie though, the way its cut with Barry Pepper taking pictures intercut with troops dying and shit that fucking makes me laugh pretty hard though and i'm pretty sure thats not what they were going for.
yeah that shit almost had me in tears from laughter. It's so out of place and so badly edited and the music just puts it over the top into sheer unintentional hilarity. The rest of the movie is top notch.
