Yeah I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to see The Roses. Their sound was typically better in smaller indoor gigs with a more relaxed atmosphere, as opposed to 70,000 outdoor in Heaton Park in the pissing rain. Still, despite the sound not travelling brilliantly (I was in the front section closest to stage at the back so had less trouble than people in the middle or further) and Brown's voice being a thing of the past the vibe, atmosphere and nostalgia of hearing these songs live in person more than made up for it. One of the things I love about them is that even with a less than stellar lead vocalist the music itself is very virtuous and addictive and the dominance of Squire, Mani and Reni ahead of the vocals ensures their wonderful sound is powerful and what you take away most from their performances.
Was a surreal gig though. My mate had flares which he set off 3 times, at one point one woman for some reason tried to throw alcohol on it as we put it safely away in a small circle to heat out, thus a man was forced to whip out his johnson and put out her mess. People around us were flashing (talking early to mid 40s here) and doing drugs and the first 40 minutes we were practically being thrown person to person in a lunatic mosh as the all people around us tripped out and just went barmy.
Also, one of my favourite gifs surfaced again today so I'm taking the excuse to post it here:

Haha that sounds like a wacky experience, my kinda thing. Yeah, I always hated seing bands play in Stadiums because the sound is uneven and echo ridden. Smaller venues not only feel more intimate, bu the sound is generally uniform and crisp depending on the equipement used.
Come to think about it, I MIGHT see the Stone Roses live this year. I'm going to the Osheaga 2013 Festival in Montreal this summer, and (I believe) TSR played there last year. They never list the bands too early in advance, so there's no telling who will show up. They always have a killer lineup though.
EDIT: Stadiums and outdoor gigs.
