Cody it is a wonderful match. Not sure where the praising for making it the best scaffold match in history ends and the actual discussion of it being a legit great match in its own right ends. They time the near bumps beautifully and Dundee does some truly astounding feats to put over his experience and agility as well as working it as a basis of avoiding Koko who's the more aggressive of the two. Its 2/3 falls and they time each fall to perfection and continually work the crowd into a frenzy with everything they do. Special props to them stiffing the shit out of each other with punches and dangerous spots like Koko tripping Dundee on the scaffold, when you watch scaffold matches today and see the care and precision in everything they do its frightening to see how risque Dundee and Koko were in this match with such an unsturdy frame.
Lawler has some tremendous feuds throughout the 80s. Jimmy Hart feud with involves Funk being brought in and building to a very good and near great Lawler/Hart match is terrific, the aforementioned Mantell feud in '82 produces 3 strong matches and a great studio angle in between, the Dundee rivarly from '83-85 which is on and off produces two top 5 matches in the history of the territory as well as a beautiful heel turn from Dundee in October 1985. Can't forget the Austin Idol & Tommy Rich feud in late '86 through into '87 and the culmination in the Hair vs Hair Steel Cage match. In between all of this you have Lawler's quest to become NWA/AWA champion leading to bouts with Bockwinkel for the AWA belt, Flair as NWA champ coming in for a wonderful match and angle in August 1982, Martel as AWA champ facing Lawler and late '88 bouts with Hennig over the AWA belt. Eaton/Koko vs Cobra/Mantell 7/19/82 is also one of the best US tags in history (top 10-15), though sadly the youtube link was removed. Moondogs vs Fabulous Ones also produces numerous great brawls with the stretcher match being a personal favourite of mine.
Flair/Koko in Memphis for the NWA belt is also a great match built around the plucky Koko trying to hang with Flair.
Mid South '85, sweet jesus. Flair/Wahoo McDaniel, Duggan/Dibiase, Duggan/Sawyer 11/11 and 12/27, Flair/Jake, Murdoch vs Reed 9/22, just a plethora of wonderful angles and matches. Duggan/Sawyer 11/11 is just indescribably great, so much passion, violence and presentation of the match and post match angle: shame we're not likely to get feuds and angles like that anytime soon.
I'm going to be calling it a night after this so if you hook me up the link here, elsewhere, or whenever then I definitely will give it a watch. 2013 MOTY watching & 2010 WWE can take a backseat for it. It's getting me too hyped by the pimping for me not to see it asap.
Lawler's AWA work I've gotten familiar with. That's a territory I've gotten through a good portion of. Really does seem as if all I have left to tackle is Memphis & Mid-South classics. AHHHHHHH I was legit going to ask you to also send me any form of a link to the Eaton/Koko vs Cobra/Mantell tag, but you proceeded in telling me it was removed. Soul crushing. You should know by now that I'm for ANYTHING Eaton has to offer. I fucking adore that man and his work. I'm not particularly big on the Moondogs. I could see a brawl with them working of course. Of course their opponents turn out to be the Fabulous Ones, so there is a silver lining right there. (think you can piece together why I'm such a fan of Eaton & Lane era Midnight Express, huh?)
Oh shoot, the Murdoch vs Reed stuff you told me about. I knew Butch Reed had to come up in here. I might not be on Andy levels of marking for him (yet)
but I've always wanted to see his territory days. I'll ask despite departing atm - any JYD goodness from Mid-South? Almost certain he was their World Champion at one time. Oh and Buzz Saywer in something violent? Color me not shocked. Man is insane.
This is beautiful information. It seems like my 2010 kick might be replaced. I thought it was going to be by early 90's WWF (I relived King of the Ring '93 tonight - <3 Lawler - & wanted to watch EVERYTHING involving Bourne's time as Doink b/c I think the world of it.)
only now it might have to be more of these territories. So, with that being said I'm out for now. Busy tomorrow and I'll be back to check out the scaffold match whenever I can. Cheers, WC. (and the rest of the good natured lads of TTT.)
