Re: Classic WWF/E stories and anecdotes

Here's another oldschool Mid-South one involving General Skandor Akbar and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

In May, 1985, there was a match in Jackson, Mississippi between Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Kamala at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Near the end of the match, General Akbar became involved and burned Duggan with a fireball. It led to a "Special Bulletin" on TBS's Mid-South Wrestling TV program...right after a match involving Brad Armstrong and Jake "The Snake" Roberts in the semi-finals of the tournament for the Mid-South TV title. Watts interrupted the program to make the announcement of Duggan's injury.

Fast-forward to June 1, 1985...the Superdome in New Orleans. Every three months or so were the Mid-South's big Superdome Extravaganza supercards. Among the matches on this night were Sgt. Slaughter and Terry Daniels vs. the Dirty White Boys in a "Bootcamp" match, NWA World champion Ric Flair vs. Terry Taylor, the Snowman vs. Jake Roberts for the Mid-South TV title, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Kamala in a highly-publicized rematch from the night that Akbar burned Duggan.

When Akbar arrived at the arena, he was greeted by New Orleans Police who had informed him there were at least 10 threats to Akbar's life being phoned in to the police. One of the officers pulls out a bulletproof vest and informs Akbar for his safety he will want to wear this. Akbar at first refuses, but he said that the officer told him, "Either you wear this or you don't go on tonight." He went ahead and wore it, and fortunately nothing happened.
