Friday Night Smackdown Preview - Episode #597
January 28th, 2011
US Bank Arena
Cincinnati, Ohio

"It's only smoke and mirrors..."

The final turn before The Road to Wrestlemania officially begins in just two nights time emanates from the great city of Cincinnati, Ohio, and they have a hell of a show lined up for them just two nights before The Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View.

Last week, for the first time since the rivalry began, we saw the World Heavyweight Champion, Edge, finally get the better of his challenger at The Royal Rumble, Cody Rhodes. The Dashing number one contender tried to assault Edge after his hard-fought victory over a game Alberto Del Rio, but the wily veteran stood tall as he saw Cody off with stiff strikes and it was almost topped off with a Spear, but the second generation superstar managed to escape. Nevertheless, it was still a victory for Edge as he stood tall with the World Heavyweight Championship to close the show. A sign of things to come in Boston in just over 48 hours? We don't know. What we do know is that due to the attempted attack by Rhodes, Theodore Long has booked Cody in a match against one of the toughest men in wrestling history - The Fighting Irishman, Finlay! If that wasn't enough for the young upstart, Teddy has assigned none other than EDGE has the special guest referee. Teddy Long is taking a risk, putting Cody and Edge in the same ring together, but we highly doubt the fans will mind because fireworks are promised!

With now all of the Smackdown entrants confirmed for the match, Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long has scheduled a huge match for a handful of the entrants. There will be an eight man tag team, pitting eight of the thirteen Smackdown entrants against one another. Rey Mysterio, Big Show, Kofi Kingston and Chris Masters have the unenviable task of facing the foursome of Dolph Ziggler, Kaval, Alberto Del Rio and JTG. With all eight of these clashing personalities in the ring at one time, as well as the desire to build up much-needed momentum ahead of The Rumble Match this Sunday, one thing can be guaranteed - And that is chaos. Who will pick up the victory and head in to The Rumble with a victory?

One of the underdogs in the Royal Rumble, is The Glamazon, Beth Phoenix. Beth already has Royal Rumble experience, entering last year's Rumble match, so this isn't new territory for the dominant diva. In an attempt to build some much needed momentum ahead of The Royal Rumble, Beth has been placed a very difficult task, as she wrestles another Diva that would love some momentum ahead of the Pay-Per-View... The WWE Divas Champion, NATALYA NEIDHART! Although the feud between Natalya and her challenger, Melina, has predominantly taken place on Raw, the Divas division is an interbrand attraction and the Anvilette agreed to show up on Smackdown to take on her good friend, Beth Phoenix. Which Diva will gain steam heading in to Boston? We'll have to wait and see but it promises to be a hard hitting and competitive affair between two of the very best Divas in WWE history.

It isn't often that the WWE Board Of Directors are backed in to a corner, but this week, they have been. The heated rivalry between Trent Barreta and Drew McIntyre has become that personal, that the Board of Directors and Smackdown General Manager, Teddy Long, have been left no choice but to allow the two enemies to duke it out in the main event of tonight's broadcast, in a No Holds Barred match! Last week, the youngster from New York defeated Drew's handpicked opponent, Tyler Reks, to earn himself a measure of revenge against The Chosen One. Since debuting, we've seen the mean streak grow and develop inside of The Sinister Scotsman, but we haven't seen him in uncontrolled circumstances like we will see him in tonight. Many say Trent doesn't stand a chance, but if there's one thing we've learnt about Trent, it's that he refuses to give up, and there's a possibility that his innovative offence and never-say-die attitude may thrive in this environment. Both men are scheduled to wrestle in The Royal Rumble match on Sunday, as well, but for some reason here at WWE.Com, we highly doubt either man will hold back tonight.

All of this, plus the WWE Tag Team Champions, Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov, are scheduled to perform and much much more, only on Friday Night Smackdown!

Confirmed Matches:

No Holds Barred Match - Drew McIntyre vs. Trent Barreta

Cody Rhodes vs. Finlay - Edge as the Special Guest Referee
Eight Man Tag Team Match - Big Show, Chris Masters, Kofi Kingston and Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Kaval and JTG
Non-Title Match - Natalya Neidhart vs. Beth Phoenix
Non-Title Match - Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov vs. Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks
