It just isn't laid out in front of you in a conventional way. A film like Inland Empire is meant as a surreal piece of art, it's the movie equivalent of something like a Dali painting, you have to look closely to get what it's saying. Even if you don't get it, I don't think you could say Lynch is a bad film maker. Saying his movies are a load of nonsense is completely missing the point imo.
