I mean, literally almost nothing happens in between Smaug & the Battle. Are they just going to spend 2 hours talking about the battle?
They gotta deal with the Necromancer that they introduced. Which is actually Sauron...spoilers! And the mystery of the Morgul Blade. There's a lot of side stuff, including resolving that albino orc arc and whatever else Gandalf goes to do when he's not in the book.
