WF Footballer of the Year (Nominations Thread)
With the Ballon D'or announcing a three man shortlist for their illustrious prize, I thought it'd be interesting to see which players have most impressed the members in this section over the past eleven months. The idea here is to nominate ten players (in no particular order) and when someone has reached ten votes (maybe more than or less than depending on the level of response) they will become eligible for the final poll.
If you want to add a sentence or two promoting your choices that's fine, if not then just provide a list.
His 28 goals kept Milan competing with a much better Juventus team in last year's Serie A campaign and took them to the Quarters of the champions League and he has since taken that class to France with PSG. The best strength / skill ratio in the world.
The heartbeat of Juventus undefeated season which he then followed up with an unreal display at the Euros where he made one scintillating pass after another with the effortlessness of someone just kicking a ball around in the park. Balotelli might have played the role of hero in the awesome Italian destruction of Germany but as per usual it was Pirlo busy writing the script.
To be in the same league of goalscoring as Muller makes you a very special player indeed. When you factor in the Argentine's selflessness it looks even better. The finest talent since Diego.
An awesome year for Action Man. He finally got the better off the world's best defenders on a regular basis and went close to taking Portugal to a European final.
Just an incredible shotstopper. Nothing more needs to be said.
Just when his career couldn't get any better he becomes part of a historic Spanish side that win the Euros with him as their standout star. An absolute joy to watch.
The main reason City won the league when you factor in his contribution over the entire premiership season. He has everything you could want from a centre back, strength, speed, vision and a warrior's spirit.
Scored countless brilliant goals for Arsenal and pretty much dragged them to 3rd place in the process. His low point at the Euros was in flopping against Denmark of all teams but he once again looks in leathal form since joining United.
The man who makes eveything tick around him. Spain might not know what they've got till he's gone.
He missed two penalties in normal play during the African Nations Cup and went missing in the premiership yet it was his vital big match contributions that transformed Chelsea's season from ordinary to extraordinary.
If you can imagine Zidane's touch combined with Pirlo's vision and Roy Keane's will to win then you have some idea of the genius of Diego Maradona.
