Re: General Movie Discussion Part II
Watched Wild At Heart. Genuinely brilliant. It's a crazy twist on the road movie, like Badlands on acid. It might have one of the best openings to a movie ever, and it gets better and better from that point on. Cage and Dern are brilliant, and what starts off as a strange and almost unlikeable couple transforms into a couple you really route for. It's all down to the situations they get into and slowly learning about them through the great character development. The crazy mother is really unlikeable and menacing and makes for a great villain along with all the other supporting characters, most of all Willem Defoe who is amazing in his role as a nutty hitman sent after the couple. The colours and editing rule and the whole film has an amazing atmosphere. It's also like Lynch's tribute to The Wizard Of Oz, and the references and comparisons to that film were really well done, especially when you realize the mother is wearing the witch's shoes. Genuinely really creepy in parts. Great payoff to the whole thing at the end that just confirmed my love for it. The score is crazy and over the top, in fact almost everything was over the top from the performances and the quick bursts of violence to the way it was edited together right from the start, but it just added to it. Oh yeah, and it's really funny too. Absolutely fantastic film.
