Tutorials can only get someone so far. I think that's where people go wrong in terms of relying on tutorials alone. I always try to look for a piece made by someone that I find amazing and try to duplicate it to the best of my ability. Finding other artists to inspire your work is the way to go.
I still do that to this day. No matter how good you get to be there's always someone better so there's always room to learn.
I always keep a tab on my favorite online artists and follow their work. Like look at this piece.
Immediately after seeing this I was inspired to add more colors and umpth to my work. Before that it was much more toned down. All about inspiration.
