Friday Night Smackdown Results
Jan 7th, 2011 | Tucson Arizona

We open the show to a huge pyrotechnic display and the cameras circling the arena at the fans. Once that has calmed down, the theme music of Drew McIntyre hits to the fan's dismay. The Sinister Scotsman grabs a microphone and says that last week he made a resolution that 2011 will be the breakout year for the chosen one. Drew says that not only will he continue to take people out and not only will he continue to hurt and destroy each and every man on the roster, he will continue to climb the ladder of success and 2011 will be the year that he finally becomes the World Heavyweight Champion... With the beautiful Kelly Kelly by his side. Drew then introduces his "girlfriend" who reluctantly makes her way down the ramp. McIntyre tries to continue his speech about the upcoming year, but Kelly soon interrupts. Kelly says that Drew has all of the talent in the world and all the tools it takes, but if Drew wants to have Kelly by his side, he needs to show some compassion. Kelly then refers to the titantron where a clip is played of last week - Drew defeated Trent Barreta after Trent missed a somersault dive over the top rope and landed flat on his back and couldn't make it back in to the ring. Even though he won, however, Drew proceeded to beat down Trent and drill him with the Futureshock DDT on the arena floor.

Kelly says that she likes Drew and she likes him a lot, but she just cannot be with a guy that ruthless, that aggressive and that heartless. Drew tries to plead with Kelly but the young blonde is having none of it, as she walks over to the ropes and attempts to exit the ring. But she is unable to do so, as Drew is fed up and becomes angry and grabs Kelly by her hair and drags her back in to the middle of the ring before screaming and yelling in her face. All of a sudden, TRENT BARRETA sprints down the ramp, and Drew throws Kelly to one side. Trent leaps on to the apron, springs on to the ropes and attempts a flying crossbody, but Drew catches him with a boot in mid air to the midsection, before nailing Barreta with another Futureshock DDT. Drew isn't done there through, as he picks up Trent again, connects with another boot to the midsection and goes for a second consecutive Futureshock, but Kelly gets right in the face of Drew and begs and pleads for him not to. Drew obliges and simply throws Trent down and storms out of the ring and up the ramp, as a concerned Kelly checks on the condition of Barreta whilst her "boyfriend" charges up the ramp and in to the back, as we go to out first COMMERCIAL BREAK

Upon return, we are treated to an amazing rubber/blowoff/feud-ending match between one of the greatest of all time and one of the young lions in the WWE, Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio respectively, in a two out of three falls match. Both men go at it for almost 14 minutes. Almost immediately after the bell rang, Rey Mysterio was able to grab the lead after managing to pin ADR's shoulders down for the three count with a Sunset Flip out of nowhere. It was Alberto's frustration and anger from that fall that then led to the first downfall for Rey Mysterio, as Del Rio's no-nonsense aggression was too much for little Rey Rey to handle, and Del Rio managed to get the threecount on Rey after destroying Rey with a Gorilla-Press Double Knee Backbreaker! From there, the momentum shifted from both men for the remaining seven minutes, but the finish came when Del Rio caught Rey's legs after a 619 attempt, dragged him to the middle of the ring and made the legendary Rey Mysterio submit with a Liontamer! After the match, Alberto Del Rio proceeded to beat down Rey Mysterio, alongside his personal ring announce Ricardo Rodriguez, before leaving up the ramp, as we go to our second COMMERCIAL BREAK

Upon return we go backstage where we see Drew chasing Kelly Kelly down the corridor. Drew tells Kelly that he is a very compassionate and loving person but sometimes he lets his anger and frustration get the better of him. Kelly takes a moment to think and finally says that she will be Drew's girlfriend but it will be a work in progress and she wants to see improvement from Drew in the upcoming weeks. McIntyre is almost speechless, as K2 grabs his hand and they walk down the corridor.

We then see Todd Grisham standing by with the World Heavyweight Champion, Edge. Todd asks Edge how he feels about his Last Man Standing Match against Kane later tonight. Edge says that to say him and Kane have had a rough history is an understatement, but unlike in 2005, Edge is used to the pressure and he is used to the main event and when that bell rings tonight - no matter how sick or sadistic Kane may or may not be - He WILL get the better of The Big Red Machine.

Back to ringside we go for the second match of the night, a rematch from last week - Cody Rhodes vs. The Big Show. The rematch was set up because Rhodes walked out on their match last week however Teddy Long has booked the rematch and should Rhodes get himself intentionally counted out or disqualified, he will be suspended indefinitely without pay. The match is how you would expect, with The Big Show dominating. However after 5 minutes of action, Rhodes attempts a Disaster Kick from the middle rope, The Big Show avoids it and Rhodes connects with the referee. Cody, who cannot believe what he just did, turns in to The Big Show, who throttles The Dashing One and lifts him high in to the air for the Chokeslam, but Cody takes advantage of there being no ref and pokes Show in the eyes. Rhodes then low blows the big seven footer, before delivering the world's biggest Cross-Rhodes. Another official sprints down the ramp and makes the three count. Cody quickly escapes up the ramp, as the giant is fuming. We then go to out third COMMERCIAL BREAK

We see a promo for the WWE's next PPV Extravaganza, The Royal Rumble, January 30th!

Backstage we see the WWE Tag Team Champions, Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov, clowning around in the locker room with the cobra and several other goofy toys... When all of a sudden the lights go out and we hear the thud of flesh on flesh and it sounds like there's a huge brawl in the locker room, but we can't see any of it at all! After half a minute of this, the lights are turned back on and the tag team champions are laid out cold... AND HEATH SLATER AND JUSTIN GABRIEL STAND TALL OVER THEM! Slater says that it's a job well done, as Gabriel scoffs before spitting on Santino and Kozlov, before exiting the room.

At ringside, 10 men make their entrance to the ring in anticipation for the Breakthrough Battle Royal to crown a new number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at The Royal Rumble. Josh Matthews and Matt Striker put over that the idea of this battle royal is to give some the opportunity to become the World Heavyweight Champion, who has never actually won the big one. These ten men are; Chavo Guerrero, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Ezekiel Jackson, a returning FINLAY, JTG, Kaval, Kofi Kingston and Tyler Reks. After the entrances, we go to our penultimate COMMERCIAL BREAK

When we return, the action has kicked off. It is your standard battle royal with nothing special to note really. Drew McIntyre, accompanied by his new girlfriend Kelly Kelly, seems very focused on the job at hand. Midway through the match, The Big Show "runs~!" to the ring and chases Cody out, but Rhodes does not exit over the top rope, as Show chases Cody around the arena. Meanwhile, everyone continues to eliminate each other for another good 7 or 8 minutes. The last two are Finlay and Drew McIntyre, who battle it out and after three minutes of back and forth action between the Irishman and the Scotsman, it's the veteran that throws his opponent out... But from nowhere, Rhodes hops the barricade, seemingly escaped from the Big Show, slides in to the ring and throws Finlay out! The bell rings and Cody Rhodes is announced as the NEW #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship! We then go to our final Commercial Break

We are then treated to the Raw Rebound! Josh and Matt on commentary then hype up next week's Monday Night Raw as it is confirmed that John Cena will be in attendance via Satelite, and we will find out a definite new #1 Contender for The Miz's WWE Championship at The Royal Rumble as Sheamus will take on Randy Orton and either CM Punk or Wade Barrett in a triple threat cage match!

To close the show, the World Heavyweight Championship is on the line between two men that have years of history but have been going at it harder than ever over the past few weeks - Edge and Kane. As you'd expect in a Last Man Standing match, it is very brutal and both men are put through intolerable amounts of pain. It is a PPV Main Event quality match, given away on free TV, and the crowd love it and show their appreciation to both men. However, there is no title change for the fans in attendance, as Edge puts Kane down for the ten count with a one man con-chair-to! A move he and his best friend, Christian, made famous over a decade ago! After the bell has rung, Edge receives his World Title belt and has his arm raised by the referee... Until from behind, CODY RHODES ambushes the Champion! The newly crowned #1 Contender for The Royal Rumble clubs Edge around the back of his head, before nailing a sickening Cross-Rhodes on the unprotected arena floor! Smackdown fades to black with Cody Rhodes standing tall over The Rated R Superstar, holding the World Title high above his head. Is this what we're going to see at The Royal Rumble in 23 days?!
