Desperate circumstances lead to desperate actions, this has been proven time and time again, the human mind works to protect you in every way possible. Obviously she needs to be punished otherwise she will grow up not knowing what is right and what is wrong. She shouldn't be tried as an adult however because she ain't an adult, if she was tried as an adult then she would emerge from prison years later a much worse person no doubt because that is what most prison systems do to people.
Let me just clarify that absolutely nobody on this forum or in the world has the right to cast judgement of death on this fourteen year old girl.
