Once they are through with Uni, then they'll have that precious career you think brings you "respect". Which, for the record, is not entirely built around having a job.
Furthermore, it's only in your eyes that he has "little respect". Outside of working, he could have numerous people who respect him, for various topics. Doesn't have to be work, could be education, accolades, achievements; anything.
There was never any need to demotivate or make him seem like a lesser being. I can only allocate that to boredom on the internet.
