For me, "real rap" is something that stays true to the culture's roots or is innovative in some way and lastly, just music good for my ears. A song like "Sucker MCs" by RUN DMC is real hip-hop whereas I don't even want to call Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" hip-hop.

And on the discussion of Will Smith, I think he's awesome. Some people whine about fake rappers that pretend to be thugs but then they turn around and diss him because he's "not street". And even as a non-ghetto style rapper, I think what Will raps about is fine and not overly corny. Fictional comedy-horror stories like "Nightmare on My Street", plain classic jams like "Brand New Funk", "Summertime" or just fun music like "You Saw My Blinkers"... he's good even for pop standards. Not a corny love-singer which is a good thing.

And when I listen to the "bad music" from the 90s and 80s, I still think it's fine compared to today's low standards. 2 Live Crew may have set the standard for low class hip-hop that many copy today but I find their music highly enjoyable, particularly their 80s stuff. Then there's straight up pop rappers like MC Hammer who I don't like or anything but can listen to without wanting to break stuff like I would with today's autotuned bullshit music. Hell, "You Can't Touch This" is a classic! Even "Ice Ice Baby" is listenable because it has that nice old school flavor to it. And I didn't even grow in that era, so it's not a matter of age.
