The time to turn Austin heel was 1999 after the fued with McMahon had finished and when the rock was red hot as a babyface. Making him a comedy character whilst having some good moments in the end eroded his Stone Cold character he had built over the five years and he lost his aura that he never was the same again.

He was a paranoid heel obsessed with the title. He actually added the humor in his character a few months after he turned heel, he didn't do it right away. Believe or not Austin's heel run got more interesting when he added the humor, before then I just saw him as another Triple H, some one who was trying too hard to get heel heat at times.
