Friday Night 'Live' Smackdown
Friday 16th January 2009 - Preview!
Live from the i wireless Center
Moline, Illinois

The Royal Rumble is now just a matter of days away, and despite everybody talking about the WWE Championship being defended in the Rumble match, there's a whole lot to talk about this Friday night. For example, there's the small matter of who will be the new World Heavyweight Champion. CM Punk kept to his word last week when he stayed at home, leaving his opponent this Sunday in their No Holds Barred match, John Cena to take his place in telling Stephanie McMahon that she's continuing to throw her weight around on Smackdown. More importantly, the General Manager, Tazz finally agreed and told Stephanie that. Given the role Tazz & Stephanie played at Night of Champions and how Cena & Punk felt about it, everything needs to run smoothly this week in Moline, Illinois. Will Punk again keep to his word and stay away, and will everyone else remain on the same page?

We learnt last week that the two brothers who are desperate to win this weekend's Royal Rumble, Edge & Christian will meet one-on-one this Friday night. They've tried to get one over on the other since Christian returned at the end of last year having been put on the shelf by The Rated-R Superstar. Which one of these two Canadians will get themselves a big momentum booster heading into the most important Rumble in its 21 year history?

Shawn Michaels & Chris Jericho will also collide this week with both men, Jericho especially focused on being the last man standing in Sunday's Rumble match. The Heartbreak Kid headed to Jericho's turf on Monday night to tell the Raw audience how he hopes to win his third Rumble and headline WrestleMania one more time. Jericho is looking to win his first and he has a big chance to head into the Rumble with some serious momentum if he can defeat The Showstopper who left Raw's Intercontinental Champion, Sheamus flat on his back after some sweet chin music on Raw Monday night. There might be some disagreement between them as to who stands a better chance in the Rumble but there's no doubt it should be a great contest when these two step inside the same ring this week live.

We saw new WWE Tag Team Champions crowned last week when Paul London & Brian Kendrick's amazing resurgence continued, taking them to the top of the tag team division when they defeated The Empire who'd only won the titles three weeks earlier at Night of Champions from Paul Burchill & TJ Wilson. It was in controversial circumstances that night and it looked like Wade Barrett & Drew McIntyre were about to use the same underhand tactic last week, only Burchill & Wilson along with Harry Smith weren't about to let that happen, giving London & Kendrick the chance to take advantage of the distraction. The Brits were understandably livid afterwards and went to Tazz demanding their rematch which they will get this Sunday night with the remainder of The Empire and the whole locker room barred from ringside. This week we'll see the new champions in action as they prepare for their title defence at the Rumble by taking on the Canadian duo of Petey Williams & Johnny Devine, former number one contenders themselves.

Another title on the line this Sunday is the United States Championship when Matt Sydal defends his title against a man who's clocked up two non-title victories over him in the last month or so in Dolph Ziggler. The challenger will be in action this week as he prepares for his title match at the Rumble when he takes on a former United States Champion, M.V.P. It'll be a tough match for Ziggler, but can he come out on top going into his match with the 2008 King of the Ring & Breakout Star of the Year?

It's sure to be an unpredictable night in Moline with the Royal Rumble just a few days away. It's a show you want to miss with some huge matches already announced and more sure to be made on the night. Make sure you don't miss it whatever you do!

>Confirmed for this week on Smackdown!<
