Last week SmackDown saw the return of General Manager Teddy Long, who certainly shook things up by firing Interim General Manager Jonathan Coachman, suspending Umaga and then making a main event to find a challenger to Batista's World Heavyweight Championship... but it seems like Edge had no desire to embrace change.
As Edge, Mr. Kennedy and Chris Benoit battled in a Triple Threat Match to determine who would face Batista on tonight's show, it appeared Edge had the match won, only for an out of place referee to again cost 'The Rated-R Superstar'. It would be Benoit who profitted from this, as he recovered to snatch the victory and the title shot... only for Edge to strike with a one man con-chair-to, despite the best efforts of 'The Animal' to overt the assault. With Benoit now ruled out indefinitely through his injuries, tonight's title match has been postponed, and instead Teddy Long has decided to let Edge and Kennedy have it, the pait meeting to decide who will face Batista on next week's show from London, England. With no love lost between Edge and Kennedy due to their dealings with each other prior to WrestleMania, this promise to be a fiercely contested main event, with Edge no doubt determined to finally earn another crack at the champion.
Now that he's United States Champion, Matt Hardy knows he's a marked man, with two potential challengers already making themselves known in the shape of Finlay and The Miz. Finlay made the first move last week, attacking Hardy after his match, laying a beating on the champion, making his intentions clear, while Miz has been more cautious, wanting to wait and see who out of Hardy and Finlay emerges as champion once they're done with each other. Hardy isn't scheduled to compete tonight, though he'll no doubt be watching on as Finlay takes one Tommy Dreamer, and of course, the loudmouth Miz will no doubt want everyone to hear his opinion on the matter.
Another issue Teddy Long vowed to fix this week is the actions of The New Breed in their quest to face The Hooligans with the WWE Tag Team Championships on the line. Two weeks ago, Elijah Burke and Monty Brown jumped London and Kendrick from behind, with Long reprimanding the pair last week. This week, Burke and Brown will take on a team of Teddy's choosing, but with Long granting London and Kendrick the night off to allow London's injured knee a chance to heal, just who will Teddy choose to take on the newcomers?
Elsewhere, Kane looks to continue his recent winning ways as he takes on Montel Vontavious Porter, a match that is sure to have the full attention of King Booker. Bryan Danielson is in action again as he takes on Joey Mercury, with Gregory Helms no doubt continuing to canvas for signatures for his petition to have the Cruiserweight Championship retired in his honour. And we'll hear more on the situation brewing between Chavo Guerrero and the impending return to SmackDown of Rey Mysterio.
