Monday Night Raw – Preview!
Monday 12th January 2009
Live from the Sprint Center
Kansas City, Missouri
We're now just a week away from the 20th annual Royal Rumble live on pay-per-view that will see the WWE Championship defended in the Rumble match for the first time in its 21 year history. Only on one other occasion has the title been decided in the 30 man every man for himself battle royal, but this time Triple H has the job of overcoming insurmountable odds by not just retaining his title but doing it from number one. It's been one thing after another for the WWE Champion in recent weeks, from finding out three weeks ago he'd be defending the title in the Rumble to a week later being told he'd be the number one entry in the match.
Then last week he got another shock, and so did everyone else when the man he put on the shelf at the Survivor Series, Randy Orton returned to Raw to a surprisingly positive reception from the fans in attendance. He calmly but menacingly made his way down to the ring before hitting The Game with an RKO to a deafening reaction from the fans. It came as a shock to everyone, and it's not yet known if The Viper will be on Raw this week from his home state of Missouri or more importantly if he'll be in the Royal Rumble Sunday night. The odds are we'll find out this week in Kansas City. Will Orton be there in his home state? If so will there be a response from The Game, and in just what kind of a mind frame will he be in as he prepares for the toughest challenge of his career at the Royal Rumble?
Also making a return to Raw last week was Ted DiBiase, and he was intent on getting a place in the Rumble too. He seemed to think he would just be handed a place in the match, but no. Eric Bischoff was quick to put him in his place on his return from suspension, and with DiBiase blaming their past history for not wanting to gift him a spot in the Rumble, Bischoff threw him a bone. He gave DiBiase the chance to earn his way in by giving him a match against The Undertaker, the man Ted was supposed to face a couple of times which he no showed for, leading to his suspension.
DiBiase rose to the challenge and went toe-to-toe with The Undertaker, and thanks to a distraction from a man the phenom has had his issues with as of late in the Intercontinental Champion, Sheamus, Ted won the match by count out to win a place in the Royal Rumble and gain the chance to become the WWE Champion. Will the cocky young pretender get his wish this Sunday? First he has to go to Kansas City, if does show up that is, and will Sheamus dare play with fire again in the build up to the Rumble match he & Taker will both be in?
Chris Jericho's been a busy body since returning last month and choosing to move to Raw, however he again showed his face on Smackdown last Friday night, as well as opening his big mouth. He managed to talk himself into a match with John Cena, and that was after being hit by a sledgehammer last Monday night by his own tag team partner, Triple H. The self proclaimed Best in the World has been talking up his chances of winning the Rumble, but will he be able to back up his words this week before he heads to the Rumble?
Also on the end of a sledgehammer shot last week was The Big Show where he teamed up with Smackdown's Shawn Michaels to take on Jericho & Triple H. Michaels avoided the sledgehammer and with Smackdown superstars entered in the Rumble match, will some of them show their faces on Raw this week like The Heartbreak Kid did last week? Anything is possible with the stakes so high going into the most eagerly anticipated Royal Rumble of all time.
It's sure to be a one hell of a show with the Rumble just a matter of days away and so much at stake. Whatever you do you can't afford to miss Raw this week, live from Kansas City, Missouri. Make sure you don't as you will be sure to regret it!
