Friday Night Smackdown
Friday 26th December 2008 - Preview!
From the E Center
West Valley City, Utah
The last Smackdown of the 2008 is upon us and after the events of Night of Champions this past Sunday it should be an explosive end to the year.
We saw a new World Heavyweight Champion crowned in highly controversial circumstances when John Cena defeated CM Punk. He owes Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley a big one after the WWE's Executive Vice-President counted a quick fall, something that neither Cena or Punk looked too happy about. It's safe to say that Punk will be gunning for Stephanie yet again, only this time he has every right to be angry, but will that make any difference, and what kind of reception will Cena get as the new champion from the far from welcoming Smackdown locker room? It's going to be a bumpy ride that you simply can't afford to miss.
New WWE Tag Team Champions were also crowned in controversial circumstances after Wade Barrett knocked Paul Burchill out with brass knucks slipped into the ring to him by William Regal, securing Barrett & Drew McIntyre the tag team titles they've set their sights on since arriving on Smackdown earlier this year. Burchill's full time tag team partner, Harry Smith was understandably angry as he & his stand-in, TJ Wilson had to endure seeing The Empire parade with their newly won titles. We understand that they won't have long to settle into their new role as champions as they will be in action this week against Paul London & Brian Kendrick. It'll be a tough test for the new champions as London & Kendrick have been on a roll since they've reunited recently. Could The Empire come back down to earth with a bang?
Matt Sydal & J-Red has no such problems in defending their titles as they overcame Alberto Del Rio-Ramirez & Chavo Guerrero respectively. They will be back in action on the last Smackdown of the calendar year with Red defending the Cruiserweight Championship against Johnny Devine. Sydal won't be putting his United States title on the line though when he competes in a rematch from last week against Dolph Ziggler. Last week Sydal was distracted by Del Rio-Ramirez and the distraction helped Ziggler pick up a victory over the Breakout Star of the Year. Can Sydal end the year on yet another high or will he lose to Ziggler for a second straight week?
Another champion who successfully defended their title Sunday night was Beth Phoenix, overcoming Michelle McCool to retain the diva's title. Surely The Glamazon will be happy to have shut McCool up, and we understand that she too maybe in action this week but it's yet to be confirmed. Having got McCool off her back she shouldn't care less about stepping into the ring after her victory on Sunday evening.
'The Rated-R' Superstar' Edge received a shock last week during his match with John Cena when his brother, Christian returned out of the blue. It was six weeks ago that Edge put Captain Charisma on the shelf after attacking him in the parking lot at the Survivor Series before they were both set to compete in the highly anticipated Team Cena versus Team Punk elimination match. It looked like Christian couldn't wait to get his hands on his brother last week and we hear that he will be at Smackdown this Friday night in West Valley. Make sure you're there to see him.
It sure promises to be an exciting end to 2008 this Friday night. You'd be a fool to miss it!
