Re: Music turned to utter shit!

There's more music than ever before, so there's therefore more shitty music than ever before.

Taste is subjective, of course, but, in terms of quality of musicians, most mainstream music is shit. That is fact. Artists in the 60's and 70's were true generals of their craft, many of them having been classically trained and having been involved in music since childhood.

Then the whole punk movement came along as the antithesis of 70's prog (some of which, as the fathers of punk legitimately pointed out, was a bit pretentious). Punk had the idea that "anyone can play music" and that it was okay to play shitty songs without really understanding what you were doing because at least it was your song to play. It was okay to not know a lot of chords, or any music theory, because the chords you struck belonged to you. Technology helped make that idea a reality, and there was a bunch of shitty New Wave bands in the 80's that thought pressing buttons on a keyboard made them artists.

Nowadays, any fucker with a computer can make music. Ergo, there's lots of shitty music made by lots of people who have no clue what they're doing. Most of it is crap, and most of it sounds the same, because most people are inspired by the same crappy music.

Of course, it's just my opinion that it is crap. Some people go to local shows with crappy bands and actually enjoy the stale, boring, uncreative music that is played there. I don't.

It does need to be said, however, that there exists great music being made by our coevals. It's just a bit tougher to find. Albums like "Thick as a Brick" are not going to top charts ever again, but they don't need to because you can find great music off the Billboard Top 40 by doing just a smidgen of research.

Not that difficult. Regina Skeptor. <3
