If Kane debuted now, the gimmick would never get over. Today's fans feel like they're at a comedy show rather than a play. Rather than sit and respond when it's appropriate, they'd rather try to heckle for a cheap buzz and it can totally ruin the product on occasion. Remember some of the Undertaker promo's leading up to WrestleMania where the fans were giving him the "WHAT?" and it totally ruined one of his promos. The way they're treating Ryback and Albert as wel by referring to past gimmicks in their chants and in Ryback's case not even his previous gimmick, they chant Goldberg.
Luckily the fans allowed Kane to get over and in hindsight it turned out to be one of the best debuts of all time and we've had over a decade full of good work from him since.
