Only reason I thought I was roleblocked is that I can't think of another way my bodyguard wouldn't have saved boss. Unless there was some roleblock that over-rid it?
Theory though... mafia could have used a 1-shot role to make sure only mafia roles worked but lightning rod absorbed them all. Never been in a game with a lightning rod iirc
