Friday Night Smackdown Preview
Friday 17th October 2008
Live from the Norfolk Scope
Norfolk, Virginia

The road to the Survivor Series is now under way and shaping up nicely, especially for the hugely important clash between John Cena and the World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk.

They will lock horns as team captains with Cena fighting for a shot at Punk’s title, and last week we saw those teams begin to take shape. The World Champion had an already made ally in his rookie, Alberto Del Rio-Ramirez before ‘The Rated-R Superstar’ Edge offered him his services, although he made it clear he wants Cena off of Smackdown as well as taking Cena’s title shot, which who knows how that could turn out. Later on in the evening though Punk’s rookie stood up to the test against Cena, making life very difficult for him before eventually being put away by Smackdown’s number one star.

We weren’t done there however as Edge stormed the ring to spear Cena and was then joined by Punk until Matt Sydal came to help Cena out having accepted a place on Team Cena earlier on. The numbers game proved too much for the United States Champion but not Christian as he surprised everyone, Edge in particular as he saved the day and then offered Cena his services for Survivor Series. Cena accepted and both captains now have two men on their respective sides. This week Punk will meet one of the men he’ll face in a few weeks when he takes on the King of the Ring and fellow title holder, Matt Sydal in a Champion versus Champion match. If it wasn’t exciting enough before last week it sure is now!

Another Smackdown superstar who’ll be leading a team at the Survivor Series is ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ Shawn Michaels against a team led by arguably the man with the biggest mouth in the whole WWE in The Miz. Michaels received the challenge from Mr. Hollywood after being jumped by him & Heath Slater during his No Mercy rematch last week against Jack Swagger. The Showstopper has never been one to shirk a challenge and he didn’t turn down this one either, and on Raw Monday night he showed The Miz that it takes a lot to put him away. Is The Miz going to be coming back for more this Friday night?

In other developments from Monday night, we learnt that Eric Bischoff & Tazz agreed to hold an inter-promotional elimination match at the Survivor Series which will see ‘The Celtic Warrior’ Sheamus lead Team Raw against Team Smackdown. He will be joined by his rival, Carlito which may well be naive on the part of Raw’s Head of Authority. In the meantime though Smackdown needs to find a team and a captain. Maybe Tazz will let Raw know what he has in store for them this week.

There’s already a whole host of exciting action lined up for Smackdown live this Friday night in Norfolk, Virginia as we will crown a number one contender for Johnny Jeter’s Cruiserweight Championship. The cocky young champion has had his issues with his rookie, Yoshi Tatsu and Santino Marella as of late, and expect them to be involved as well as another mentor/rookie combination in J-Red & Chavo Guerrero, and they too as you’ve seen have their own issues. It should be an exciting contest to see who will meet Jeter in just over a week from now for the gold.

Christian got his hands dirty last week as we mentioned before, only this week he will be in action when he teams up with his trusty problem solver, Tyson Tomko to take on The Empire, who have added William Regal to their little anti-American group. With Captain Charisma still reeling after being screwed out of the World Championship by Edge at No Mercy, maybe the Brits are finally going to get what’s coming to them.

We’ll also see the impressive duo of Bobby Lashley & Charlie Haas take on Petey Williams & Johnny Devine in a rematch from last week after the Canadians went to ask for a rematch. Lashley & Haas have looked almost unstoppable in recent weeks, still yet to taste defeat as a duo and they’ll look to keep that going this week.

M.V.P. & Ron Killings will return to action this week when they meet Chris Masters and The Masterpiece’s rookie, Ryan Sheffield. They both had a night to forget at No Mercy but one of those two teams will see their luck change for the better Friday night in Norfolk.

Also in action is TJ Wilson, the rookie of Harry Smith, one half of the WWE Tag Team Champions. It looked like the other half, Paul Burchill would have to fight alone last week against Masters & Sheffield until Smith showed up with Wilson & Natalya Neidhart at the last second. The UK Pack were victorious but Burchill still wasn’t happy afterwards, walking out on Smith and his long time friend & cousin. It seems that Smith’s relationship with his rookie could be causing some tension with his partner & co-champion. Will that have any effect on Wilson’s match against the angry Dolph Ziggler this week? After losing to Elijah Burke at No Mercy and missing out on a date with Layla before then finding out Burke & Layla got engaged last week, surely Ziggler’s anger levels will be at an all time high when Smackdown rolls in to Virginia this week.

Whatever you do don’t miss Smackdown this week as we continue on the road to the Survivor Series!
